Note, then, that this album, despite the similar title, is a newly compiled 1995 CD/cassette containing all of the recordings on =Strange Brew,= plus ten more. It is thus the most comprehensive {Cream} anthology on the market, including all the group's essential tracks on a single disc with superior sound in a package containing good annotations.

Cream's music was equal parts stunning, guitar-based innovation ("Badge," "White Room"), stoned schoolboy silliness ("Doing That Scrapyard Thing," "Pressed Rat And Warthog"), and horribly pretentious crap ("N.S.U.," "Toad"). This group literally invented the drawn-out rock drum solo, it's all their fault. And the lyrics! "Tiny purple fishes run laughing through your fingers," and "But the rainbow has a beard," sung falsetto, no less. Cream were creative and irreverent with their heavy-duty blues influences, and their takes on "Sitting On Top Of The World" and "Spoonful," while not as incendiary as the originals, far surpass the mere imitation of most blues-rock of the day, as well as the arrogant swagger of '70s blooz-rock. This set is packed to the gills; there's an awful lot of music for a group who were together just two years. And while not all of it's not as choice as the incendiary four-minutes of "Sunshine Of Your Love," Those Were The Days is the essential document of these pioneers of blues-psych rock and roll.

THOSE WERE THE DAYS is a four-disc set, the first half consisting of Cream's entire studio output and the last half featuring the band's concert performances. The package includes a 48-page booklet full of previously unpublished photos.
In the two years they were together, Cream's blend of blues, psychedelic rock and quirky lyricism forever altered the definition of rock music. After releasing four seminal albums, Cream broke up as quickly as they had come together, with all three members going on to solo careers of great acclaim. THOSE WERE THE DAYS brings together Cream's musical output in a deluxe four-CD set that's neatly halved between studio and live material.
Meticulously compiled and remastered, DAYS includes every studio recording the band ever released, as well as previously unreleased demos, masters, rare and alternate takes. The live half of the box set is primarily culled from seminal performances at legendary venues like San Francisco's Winterland and Fillmore West.
The sound has been considerably cleaned up allowing the listener to hear every nuance of these extended flights of jazz-flavored blues-rock improvisation. The package surrounding Cream's timeless musical output sports a DISRAELI GEARS-style day-glo cover and a 48-page color book. The accompanying notes, complemented by dozens of previously unpublished photos, provide an intimate glimpse into the brief, but groundbreaking career of the original power trio.

=Those Were the Days= is an ambitious four-disc, 63-track box set that divides {Cream's} career into two halves. The first two discs feature every studio track the group ever released, plus a handful of unreleased cuts, alternate takes and rarities. The other two discs are devoted to live material, which is segued together in an attempt to recreate the "ideal" {Cream} concert. It's a remarkably comprehensive collection, complete with an extensive booklet and remastered sound, yet it doesn't reveal any new insights about {Cream,} nor does it offer any invaluable rarities. Therefore, it's only for diehard collectors or listeners wanting to acquire the entire {Cream} catalog at once; casual fans will be satisfied with individual albums or greatest-hits collections.
