Our Lady Peace were formed in November of 1992, in Toronto, Ontario. Original members of the band included Raine, Mike, Jeremy and Chris Eacrett. The name Our Lady Peace was derived from a 1943 poem by Mark Van Doren, which according to Raine, is 'about a fiddler who talks to an angel who watches over a little town'. After recording several demo tapes and a video, Our Lady Peace was signed with Sony Music Canada after courting offers from some other labels in the early months of 1993. Our Lady Peace released their first album, Naveed, in May of 1994. At the time, Naveed was only released in Canada. The first single was 'The Birdman'. In June, 1994, Starseed became a major hit single in Canada. Other Canadian singles to follow were Naveed, Supersatellite, Hope and Julia. Only Starseed, Naveed and Supersatellite were singles in the US. A summer tour across Canada with I Mother Earth led Our Lady Peace to small clubs in support of Naveed. They continued to tour through the fall, and winter. In March, 1995, Our Lady Peace began an extensive US tour, which featured over 100 shows. The most notable occurred on April 28 and 29, when they opened for Robert Plant and Jimmy Page. Naveed was finally released in the US in May, 1995. Our Lady Peace toured with Van Halen in the summer of 1995. They also released a promotional live CD, which featured live versions of 'Dirty Walls', 'Hope', 'Naveed', and 'Denied'. This CD was only released to members of the fan club. The band began writing new material this summer. Chris Eacrett was replaced by Duncan Coutts in September, 1995. Chris cited musical and personal differences as his reasons for leaving. Duncan had been playing in a band called Blue Heavies. With a year and a half long tour in the bag, Our Lady Peace jumped back into the studio in January of 1996 to begin recording their next album, originally to be called 'Propellor', but which was later renamed 'Clumsy'. They also recorded a cover of a Beatles song, 'Tomorrow Never Knows', for the soundtrack to the movie, 'The Craft'. July 1996, Our Lady Peace played 'EdgeFest' along with other Canadian bands including I Mother Earth, The Tea Party, Rusty, and Ashley MacIssac. After EdgeFest, Our Lady Peace went on a two week, Canadian tour with Alanis Morissette. In January of 1997, Superman's Dead is released as a single from the new, yet to be released second album. They also created a video for MuchMusic. Our Lady Peace began a short tour of Canadian Univerisities about a week before Clumsy was to be released. Clumsy is released in January, 1997. The second single from the album is Clumsy. The third single is Automatic Flowers.
