Buffalo Soldiers Greater Washington, DC Chapter 9th and 10th (Horse) Cavalry Association BUFFALO SOLDIERS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM 2009 Buffalo Soldiers Greater Washington DC Chapter 9th and 10th (Horse) Cavalry Association SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT AND APPLICATION The 9th and 10th (Horse) Cavalry Association: Greater Washington, DC Chapter “Buffalo Soldiers” announces its 2009 Scholarship Awards. The scholarship awards total $1,000.00 (one male student for $500.00 and one female student for $500.00) for two graduating seniors that attend the Washington, DC Metropolitan area high schools. If only one Scholarship is awarded, he / she will be awarded $750.00. These Scholarships may be used at any Higher Educational Institution of their choice. Students will be selected for the scholarships based on the following criteria: 1) Academic achievement: minimum 2.5 GPA (official school transcript) 2) Financial need 3) Contribution to school and community 4) Acceptance to a degree granting institution 5) Two letters of recommendation 6) An interview Applicants must complete and submit a one page (minimum, do not exceed two pages) typewritten (double-spaced), essay on one of the following topics: 1) The 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments (one or both of the regiments) 2) My Career Goal and My Achievement Plan 3) Barriers and Enhancements to my Educational Experience One copy of all official transcripts must be mailed to the Scholarship Committee Chairman (address below). Additionally, letters of recommendation from two of the following must be included in the scholarship application packet. 1) Teacher 2) Guidance Counselor 3) Minister 4) Employer 5) Community Leader Completed Scholarship Packets must be mailed and postmarked before April 10, 2009 or done online at dc buffalo soldiers chapter and forward to: lynrhi6@aol.com SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT AND APPLICATION The Scholarship Committee will choose scholarship recipients. Scholarship recipients and school officials will be notified via certified letter as soon as practical, following selection of the recipients. The recipients will be recognized at the Chapter’s Meeting April 18, 2009. Additionally, a representative from the Chapter will recognize the recipients at an appropriate school sponsored function – to be jointly determined by the school’s point of contact and the committee.
