Road America was good to Greg "Stumpy" Steltenpohl in 2004! After leaving Road America in 2003 with not one, but two major crashes, Stumpy was eager to get back and face the track again. At the CCS/Formula USA combined event held April 23-25, he lined up next to some of the best road racers in the country.
Cold temperatures made heating up the tires a challenge. The threat of rain also played a factor in tire choice on Sunday. Stumpy got his Michelins up to temperature and performing well with a top finish of 4th place in Heavyweight Superbike on Saturday on the #256 Honda 600rr.
"I was really looking to end up in the top 15 with the great competition I was up against this weekend," said Stumpy. "My practices went good and the set up felt great, so I knew if I put my head down, good things could happen."
"This was a national event so the entry numbers were huge, but I had great grids on the front row of every race and even managed a couple hole-shots. I had a great run for third place going against Andy Feruersthaler in Heavyweight Superbike, but a lapper got in the way and ruined my chance to draft him at the line."
Due to heavy fog Sunday morning and numerous red flag situations, Stumpy's last three races on Sunday, Middleweight Superbike, Heavyweight Superbike and Middleweight GP were postponed to a later date.
"I'm really glad to leave Road America crash-free this year, but I'm anxious for my next race at Blackhawk Farms Raceway in Illinois May 8 and 9 . I'm looking forward to my first expert win. Chances are good, it will happen eventually, but I'm ready to take the checkered flag now!"
Stumpy finished the weekend in 2nd place in points in Heavyweight Superbike and Heavyweight Supersport and 5th place in points in Middleweight Supersport, Superbike and GP in the Great Plains region. He is ranked 3rd overall in the CCS Great Plains region of 153 racers.
