Cardiovascular Health
Millions of people still believe the myth that cancer is the greatest threat to their health. They are wrong. Heart disease remains the Number 1 killer of Americans, and it threatens more people every day.

In 1993, heart and vascular diseases killed nearly one million Americans, almost as many as cancer, accidents, pneumonia, influenza, and all other causes of death combined. The annual American death toll from cardiovascular disease exceeds by nearly two thirds the combined combat death tolls for Americans from both world wars, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War (Academic American Encyclopedia, 1990). Every 33 seconds, an American dies because of cardiovascular disease (American Heart Association, 1995).

Heart disease touches the lives of all Americans. Some form of heart disease afflicts more than 1 in 4 people. This year alone, approximately 1.5 million Americans will have a heart attack, the major manifestation of the disease. About one third of heart attack patients will die. In addition, contrary to the misconception that heart disease affects only middle-aged men, half of the deaths from coronary heart disease occur in women. Twice as many women die each year of heart and vascular diseases than die of all forms of cancer.

In addition to the effects of heart disease on the health of the population, its economic impact is staggering. For 1996, the cost of heart disease is estimated to reach $151 billion: $129 billion in direct health expenditures and $21 billion in indirect costs of lost output from affected workers.

Although the health and economic impacts of heart disease continue to be discouraging, there is a bright side. Physicians are learning enough about heart disease to make a difference for their patients. However, the power of this information will remain underused unless doctors can convince patients to make lifestyle changes necessary to promote cardiovascular health. A heart attack is sudden, but the buildup of plaque and scar tissue takes place over many years. As physicians, we are in a position to educate, that is, to dispel some of the myths among patients about their disease.

Often patients have said to me, “Dr. Cooley, thanks for making my heart as good as new.” Although such words are gratifying, patients with heart disease need to realize that medical and interventional treatments are not cures. Although their lives may be saved by coronary angioplasty or coronary artery bypass graft surgery, patients must understand that their hearts will never be “as good as new.” What we physicians have given them is another chance: We have temporarily “bypassed” their disease. To receive the most benefit from treatment, patients should modify their lifestyles to eliminate or decrease the risk factors, cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons need to recognize the importance of treating the entire patient, because heart disease can ravage the mind as well as the body.

As Hippocrates admonished, “You ought not to attempt to cure the body without the soul…and this…is the reason why the cure of many diseases is unknown to physicians…because they disregard the whole” (Plato, 1871/1953, p. 103). Psychosocial factors such as stress, Type A behavior pattern, anger and hostility, and social isolation have all been linked to heart disease. Peer or family support can alleviate these factors. Other modifiable risk factors--smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, diet, and hypertension-also have behavioral components. Each of these psychosocial factors is discussed in Heart and Mind.

The Republican Oath

I believe that the proper function of government is to do for the people those things that have to be done but cannot be done, or cannot be done as well by individuals, and that the most effective government is government closest to the people.

I believe that good government is based on the individual and that each person's ability, dignity, freedom and responsibility must be honored and recognized.

I believe that free enterprise and the encouragement of individual initiative and incentive have given this nation an economic system second to none.

I believe that sound money policy should be our goal.

I believe in equal rights, equal justice and equal opportunity for all, regardless of race, creed, age, sex or national origin. I believe that persons with disabilities should be afforded equal rights, equal justice and equal opportunity as well.

I believe we must retain those principles worth retaining, yet always be receptive to new ideas with an outlook broad enough to accommodate thoughtful change and varying points of view.

I believe that Americans value and should preserve their feeling of national strength and pride, and at the same time share with people everywhere a desire for peace and freedom and the extension of human rights throughout the world.

Finally, I believe that the Republican Party is the best vehicle for translating these ideals into positive and successful principles of government.

Mi Verano Pasado

Durante mi verano pasado, fui a la universidad de Stanford. Cuando estuve en Stanford, participé en un programa llamado “Stanford Medical Youth Science Program”. El programa consiste de muchas actividades, clases, y experiencias sobre medicina.

Por la mañana, asistí a clases de ciencias. Por ningún motivo tuve tiempo para jugar. Durante las tardes, estudié mucho y trabajé en mi presentación. Nosotros jugamos juegos académicos y atléticos. El próxima día, nosotros fuimos al hospital. Nosotros donamos nuestro tiempo.

Nosotros valoramos el tiempo porque es muy importante. El fin de semana, nosotros estudiamos para el examen que se llama el “SAT”. Este examen de gran importancia. Los sábados fueron muy divertidos después de la conclusión de estudiar.

Una vez, nosotros fuimos al juego de béisbol. Los equipos que jugaron fue los “Athletics” o Atléticas de Oakland, California y los “Angels” o Ángeles de Anaheim, California. Otra vez, nosotros fuimos al “Monterrey Bay Aquarium”. Los animales del mar son muy fascinantes. Los colores de los animales son muy vivos. Yo me divertidí con esta experiencia.

Los domingos, mi familia me visitó. Cuando mi familia llegó, yo estaba muy contento. El momento de verlos, yo no pensé sobre los libros, las clases, o los exámenes; yo pensé sobre los tiempos de mi vida donde estaría contento.

Esa experiencia fue una de las más importantes de mi vida. La universidad de Stanford me enseñó muchas opciones. Mi verano pasado fue muy educativo y fascinante.
