Now let's learn how to edit text files. There are several different editors you can use. A text editor is like Windows Notepad. But unlike Windows, Unix has several editors. Two I would recommend are pico and edit. If you have your control buttons disabled, as most Fallsburg students do, use edit. Otherwise, try both and choose the one you prefer. When you attain skill in Unix, you might want to try vi, which is a very advanced editor. Control+X exits pico; Escape+a exits edit.

You should be in your home directory, unless you changed it with cd. If you did, type cd again to return. Why not start making a web page? You can put it on arbornet.org for hosting. Using your preffered editor, make a home page and save it as index.html. If you need help making the web page, view the sources of mine for examples.

When you are done, make a directory in your home (the directory your files are kept) called public_html, or www if you are using cyberspace.org. To do this, type mkdir public_html. Now move your index.html to this folder by typing mv index.html public_html. Your page is now on the web.

Open up your browser to http://arbornet.org/~yourname. Your web page will appear in the browser. You can also use an FTP program to upload your web pages to arbornet.org. If you are using cyberspace.org, you cannot use pictures in your site.
