National Campaign To
End U.S. Support for Israeli Occupation
Do you share the goals and principles of the National Campaign to End U.S. Support for the Israeli Occupation (see reverse)?
Do they reflect the goals of your work for peace with justice in the Middle East?
Then join us at an organizers conference of the National Campaign to share what we have learned and coordinate our efforts, so that together we can achieve the greatest effect on public opinion and on Washington.
Saturday & Sunday June 1 & 2, 2002 Chicago
Informal gathering for those arriving Friday evening, May 31
Tentative Conference Agenda
Coming Together A keynote speaker will introduce the conference and the campaign, discussing why the U.S. government supports the Occupation and why we have chosen to oppose it.
Educating Ourselves: How it Happens Panel discussion on how the U.S. role in perpetuating the Occupation and the nuts and bolts of how U.S. policy works, from military aid to diplomatic cover at the UN.
Whats Wrong with the Occupation? Occupation is a concept most Americans dont understand, even those who have an understanding of the constant dehumanization of life in occupied Palestine. What is the political/legal context of occupation? How can we make it real for different audiences?
What Have We Been Doing? Representatives of different activist organizations will share how they have been organizing to address the Israel/Palestine crisis. Breakout groups will explore different strategies (legislative advocacy, direct action, public education) so that we can learn from each others experiences.
Talking (and Listening) to Americans Reaching out to new constituencies requires that we understand the preconceptions and fears Americans bring to this issue. How do we respond to the pervasive anti-Arab racism now widespread in the country? How do traditional and new forms of anti-Semitism play themselves out? How does this work compare to other progressive movements that have won broad public support from Americans, such as the civil rights movement, the anti-apartheid movement, and opposition to U.S. intervention in Central America?
Mandates We Can Take Back We want to end this conference with a basic action program to oppose U.S. support for the Occupation that we can all support and integrate in our work at home. A common program with a national voice can complement the vitality of local efforts as we develop this new movement for peace with justice.
Costs, logistics, etc. This meeting will be housed in Chicago. A registration charge of approximately $125 will cover costs of food, lodging, and other conference organizing expenses. For more information or to register, please contact us_endoccupation@yahoo.com
The U.S Campaign to End Israeli Occupation
Call to Action
Much has changed since the terrible attacks on New York and Washington of 11 September. But one thing remains the same: the Israeli occupation of Palestine, with all its attendant injustice and its destabilizing effects on the Middle East and the world. We must redouble our efforts for peace and justice based on human rights for all. We believe that this is a peace worth building.
