I was
born in the rural part of Ethiopia in 1976. I am the oldest of 6
children.
Getting an education, even up to the high school level, was uncommon
for
the community where I was born and grew up in. Neither of my parents
had
any formal education. Both the young and the old were consumed with
making
a living through farming. Growing up in a large family, often even the
basic
necessities of life (such as adequate and nutritious meals, decent
clothing,
etc.) were rare.
Although life was difficult and education was not common, as a child, I had a thirst for learning and walked miles each way bare-footed to go to school (doing my chores on the farm after school and weekends). More
