" We write to kill pain." I don't know who to ascribe that quote to as my English teacher alluded to it, saying that one of his former students had replied to his question, "Why do we write?" that way. It struck me as profound upon hearing it. In five words it gives us the reason why we write books thousands of pages long, why we create torturous situations for our characters, why we even bother to do something that is not required. It brings us peace in some way, letting us expose ourselves, our own torment, for the creation of beauty--the opposite of pain. Pain and beauty seem to be predominant issues in all the writing I have both created and read. Both are stunning in their own way. A good author harnesses their own pain, their own suffering, and puts it to use to fashion a piece that defies description. While I can only speak for myself, I am sure that pain is the real reason why many of us write. Therefore, I ask you, won't you join us in killing at least some part of the pain that plagues us all?
