     “. . . silly questions.”

I heard the voice speaking those words, but I didn’t know it.  Socrates is top of Rachel and I can’t stop him.  I am strapped to the chair.  I want nothing more than to get up at kill him.  I know now that I am dreaming.  Never had he ever touched at Rachel, I know that I am the one making this happen.  Why?  What could make me do something so sick as hurt Rachel.  Poor sweet Rachel, now Socrates knows her and there will never be anything else for her.  He’ll kill her and leave me alone strapped to this chair that burns.

I close my eyes and then open them again.  I scream.  And I fight; the restraints will give way if I work hard enough.  The lights are different, but dreams change so quickly.  I know that the restraints will cut into the skin, but the end justifies the means.  I may bleed a little, but I’ll kill him.  Socrates will die and poor Rachel will be avenged.

I scream again and again, I work hard against the restraints, but just when I feel them start to give; another restraint is added.  My throat hurts and the lights are blinding me.  I know that there are dark shadows over me, but none of them are Socrates.  I’ll kill him, I already have killed him.  Oh Rachel, what’s wrong with me?  I scream more; I lift my body off of the bed, pushing my feet against the footboard and my head against the headboard.  When did I get into a bed, where is the chair?  Who are these shadows over me?

I finally work my left hand free, even as the shadows try to grab it.  I grab on of the shadows by what looks like the neck and throw it away from me.  I quickly try to release the other restraint on my right arm, but too many shadows.  They have made it so I can’t work my other hand free and they have pinned down my left so I can’t move it.

I hear someone calling to me, but I choose to ignore it.  I continue to struggle, I know if I can work my left hand free again I take care of at least one of these shadows.  Suddenly I feel very sluggish, like my head is find with cotton balls and my body weights thousands of pounds.  I can’t left a thousand pounds, how can I left my arms.  I know I’m drifting, but how does one drift in a dream?

Ann is finally a sleep, and Noin is helping Quatre up off of the floor.  His throat is red where Ann grabbed him.  Rachel is putting the restraints back on Ann and worrying what the effects of pushing more sedatives into her system are going to be.  Heero leaves, choose not to have any more to do with this mess.  If the baka is going to kill them as she woke up, he would have none of it.  Duo follows him, knowing that being with Heero was infinity safer than being around when Ann woke up again.

“They don’t understand Ann.  I’m sorry I had to put you to sleep again, I know you hate the drugs.  Maybe now you’ll rest peacefully?  I’m going to be right outside this door, working on that disk you got for me.  Maybe I’ll find something interesting, hmmm?”  Rachel smoothed Ann’s hair over and over again.  She then turned to walk out of the room, but Noin was blocking the way.

“What is wrong with her?”  Noin’s arms were crossed in front of her and she was battling herself for being so unfriendly to these girls, no women, who needed her help.

“When she wakes up from a dream, it’s a little hard for her to tell the difference from the dream and reality.  She doesn’t normally dream like this, but with the drugs and losing so much blood I guess she couldn’t fight it.  She’ll be okay, I think this time she’ll just wake up.  Noin, thank you.”  And Rachel walked past Noin, and went directly to the computer bank in the bunker.

There she slipped the disk into the drive and began hacking.  Hours went past and she still wasn’t having any luck opening the documents the disk held.  Heero had even taken some interest in the contents of the disk, but was little help in decoding it.  Not because he tried and failed, but because he just stood over Rachel’s shoulder and ‘hned’ at her.

Noin had taken off, needing to take care of business for Relena and Quatre wanted nothing more than to leave that small space where the scent of blood and machine grease soaked into everything.  Duo worked on his gundam, and Ann lay still in the recovery room.  She didn’t struggle against the restraints anymore, she didn’t dream about anything.  It was quiet and she was happy about that.

I open my eyes and the room is dark and quiet.  No one in here with me.  Was I captured?  Am I in an OZ hospital?  No, I remember pointing a gun at Noin and Rachel being there.  I’m not dead, but I feel like I should be.  My back hurts and I feel gorgy, must be from the drugs.  Rachel must have drugged me.  I can hear the sounds of someone working at a keyboard near by, but I can’t see them.

“Hello?  Little help, anyone?”  I call out, I could work my way out of the restraints, but I can’t seem to left my arms or struggle against them.  I feel like I weight a thousand pounds.

The keyboard sounds stop and a figure comes in from the other room.  The lights are turned on and I’m blinded for a brief second.  During this time the figure has time to get by my side and smoothes my hair.  I know it’s Rachel before I can see her, she is always smoothing my hair.  I think it is a compulsive habit, but who am I to criticize?

“I see your awake finally.  You gave me quite a bit of trouble, you?  Coming in a bloody mess, nearly killing poor Quatre when you grabbed him by the neck and threw him across the room and now you need help getting out of the restraints?”  Rachel was smiling at me, she was being sarcastic.

“Sorry, but if you could just help me with the restraints?”  I don’t like being in a position where I have not power.  Rachel releases the restraints, but I still can’t move me arms, my legs; I can barely turn my head.

"The drugs will wear off soon Shadow.  Until then, why don’t you get some sleep?”

“Sleep with me?”  I don’t want to know that I’m alone, I can remember the dreams I had.  I want to know that there is someone with me.  Rachel sits on the bed and I try to make room for her, but I just can’t move.

“Here, I’ll move you over some.  Okay?”  Rachel stands up, pushes me to the right a little and rolls me to my side.  She then lays down in the space she made vacant and curls up beside me.  I don’t know if I can sleep, but I can tell that Rachel has fallen, her breathing is slow and her heart rate steady.  I reach around her and hold her tight, remembering what I had done to her in my dreams.

“Little One, without you who am I?  Would I be Socrates?  I think I’d die without you, I don’t remember a time that I couldn’t count on your understanding, kindness or humanity to make up for the lack of my own.   I hope I die first.”  I smelled her hair and after some time I was able to make myself sleep.

Rachel awoke to find herself alone in the recovery bed, Ann had pulled the covers so she would be warm and had snuck off.  Rachel could hear the sound of keys clicking in the other room, she really didn’t have to make that big of a guess where Ann had gotten off to.

She got out of the bed and went around the corner to see Ann still in her hospital robe, sitting at the console typing away at the OZ encrypted files.  She could hear how fast her fingers flew over the board and noticed that the rest of the body didn’t move, but she could be sure that the eyes were following the lines of code to see where she might end up.

Rachel went up stairs to their dorm room to get some cloths for Ann, as she wouldn’t think to do it for herself.  Ann would stay at that console until the files were accessible.  Of course, getting her to stop so Rachel help her dress wasn’t going to be fun.  When she got back down for the dorm room, Ann’s hands were turning purple and blue from the cold.

“Better get you in some clothing before you turn blue all over Ann.  Come one, get up.”  Rachel walked over and Ann was pushing herself out of the chair.  Rachel had to help her get into the flight suit, her back was stiff and there was a problem getting the suit to not rub on the bandages on Ann’s lower back.  But, finally Ann was dress and working at the console again.  Rachel pulled up another chair and the two of them started working of the code together in silence.

Two days later they looked at the screen.  There were the blueprints for a large battleship, the Libra.  Ann left the console and looked like she was on the verge of killing someone.  She went up the stairs and out to the garage where the students of Relena’s school kept their vehicles.  There was her FWD, she got in, hot wired it and drove off.

Rachel just looked at the blue prints, she could see why Ann was so upset.  All over the place in the blue prints were Dr J’s calling card.  How a certain circuit was made or the way the amour was placed.  Rachel had known that the scientists had been arrested by OZ, but why would they make a battle ship for them that would work?  Ann was going to be gone for a while, Rachel knew that much.  But as to what she should do now, she didn’t have a clue.

Shadow had been moved to the hanger the day that Ann had come back a mess, so Rachel went over to it and used the rope ladder to get to the cockpit and went started the process of changing some of the safeties she had written into the code of the Zero System.  She had taken the precaution of making certain things and people undesirable targets.  While Ann could still destroy an entire colony cluster if she wanted too, the Zero System wouldn’t push her to it.  Rachel deleted the faces of the five scientists, they were now just as worthy of being shot and killed as any other enemy Ann found.
