Synopsis

The Deaths at the Start

No. 1 - Katie... a 16 year old girl of the group of 4 who went to Shelter mountain is viciously twisted and distorted right before her friend, Becca [did not watch the tape so suffers the pain of watching Katie die the way she did] causing Becca to go into severe mental shock and ending her up in a mental health facility... ironically the same facility that Samara was sent to by her father...

No. 2 - Josh... secret boyfriend of Katie who was part of the group of 4 at Shelter Mountain... When Rachel Keller first begins her questions about the tape a friend of Josh who did not go to Shelter Mountain tells that the same night that Katie had died, Josh had supposedly killed himself by jumping to his death from a high-rise building..

No. 3 -	Two unknown friends of Katie and Josh... the two friends that we see nothing of except on Rachel's notepad when she writes down the time of Katie's death.. these two were killed in a car crash the same night that Katie and Josh died... this death originates from the ancient myth of Sadako where she could appear from any reflective surface...

The Story

Rachel Keller embarks on her quest to find the origin and reason behind the tape and the mysterious deaths stated above...

Her quest first takes her to Shelter Mountain... where Katie and her friends watched the mysterious tape that was told of... Rachel finds a suspicious looking video that she watches and that happens to be the same tape that Katie and co. watched 7 days before their own brutal deaths... Disturbed by what she sees and with her fear and questions growing she is pushed to jump to someone with more experience with video technology...

This is where her ex lover, Noah... a master when it comes to video technology comes in.. When Noah responds to the tape with little more than a shrug a comments that it is "a very student film", Rachel leaves frustrated and annoyed that she might be over-reacting... Doing what Noah asks of her, Rachel makes a copy of the tape for him and finds that the strange encoding that appears in the display of the VCR has copied across and Noah explains to her that to not have proper coding means that no known video equipment was used to make the tape... further discoveries such as lack of reflection of a video recorder in front on shots to a mirror shown on the tape puzzles video master Noah wondering what could have made the tape and after he begins to notice the same signs that first had Rachel creeped out he finally succumbs to the legend and admits that he believes Rachel's accusations that it was the video tape that killed her niece Katie and her friends..

After finding a hidden image on the tape, Rachel then begins to fall into a trail of clues and she ends up travelling to Moesko Island... home of the Morgan family and of the lighthouse Rachel discovered on the hidden section of tape... Finding nothing there but more puzzles and rude treatment from Mr. Morgan [the only remaining member of the family] and also watching the destruction of a horse on her way to the island she returns to the mainland to visit the Mental Health Facility that Becca was sent to after Katie's gruelling death...

After being mysteriously told by Becca that she only has 4 days left, Rachel is left with nothing but to return home to look over her clues and that night is given a dream in which she enters her Aidan's [her son] room to find nothing but a chair with a long, dark haired, girl sitting in it with her back to her surrounded with a circular puzzle of water... when she approaches the chair and goes to put her hand on the girls shoulder the mouldy, wet hand of the girl grabs her wrist... the room spins and Rachel wakes up with a hand mark burned into her arm where the girl had grabbed her... a soft glow is coming from the lounge room and Rachel runs out to find her fears confirmed... Aidan had watched the tape while she was sleeping because he could not sleep...

Now driven to solve the mystery to stop her son from dying she travels back across to Moesko Island to get more information from Mr. Morgan and watches video footage of his daughter [Samara Morgan] in the Mental Health Facility being questioned and spending her day in her little cell watching the time pass by... After having that television taken off her by a distressed Morgan father Rachel follows him upstairs to see him commit suicide by electrocution and is caught screaming by Noah who has new information about Samara that he found at Becca's institute...

Noah and Rachel then travel on the last day on Rachel's 7 days back to the Morgan family's vacation spot... Shelter Mountain... pissed off at the fact that he and Rachel seem to be running in circles, Noah accidentally discovers that the floor of Cabin 12 [the cabin that Katie & Co. as well as Rachel watched the tape in first] slopes down and they pull up the floor to reveal a well covered with a stone slab...

After long moments of staring down the seemingly endlessly deep well after pushing aside the stone slab... a swarm of flies burst out of the well and the floor collapses causing the television form Cabin 12 to slide down, knocking Rachel into the well... As Noah frantically searches for something to get Rachel out the stone slab slides over the well locking Rachel inside and revealing exactly what THE RING is...

Rachel is shown a scene of Samara before she died standing by the well singing and her mother who walks up behind her and covers Samara's head with a black plastic bag before tipping her into the well... THE RING is the rim of light that can be seen from the bottom of the well when looking up at the covered entrance...

Rachel then comes to the realisation that Samara was still alive when the well was covered after finding nail marks and actual human nails in the walls of the well...
The burn mark then disappears from Rachel's arm and she discovers the body of Samara in the water of the well...

After being rescued from the well and the time being well past the 7 day limit Rachel then answers Noah's question of how long someone could survive in a well with the painful realisation of "7 days"...

The next day Rachel returns to Noah's apartment to thank him and finds him twisted and dead in his chair the same way that Katie had looked when she was discovered and returns home in a flurry of tears wondering why she was not killed when it was both Noah and herself that solved the mystery and her gaze falls upon the copy of the tape that she had thrown under the sofa after Aidan watched it...

She had copied Samara's tape helping Samara...

Rachel takes her son and helps him to copy the tape... knowing that Samara's evil would never stop... she tells her son they will be alright and holds him close as the tape copies...

Samara's pain and death forever to walk the Earth...
