In the distant future, Earth is divided into two camps; The immortal "elite" who live in the "Vortex", and the "barbarians" who live outside the vortex, and who's sole purpose is to grow grain and feed Vortex inhabitants. Zardoz is the name givin to a mask which is used to control the barbarians as their god, so they will continue to feed the inhabitants of the vortex. But endless order and perfection in their immortal lives caused the Vortex inhabitants to become apathetic, numbed, and lazy. One of the inhabitants of the Vortex, bored with eternal life, genetically engineers a superior man, called ZED, created through selective breeding of the barbarians. ZED was created to find a way to kill the elite. ZED eventually comes upon an old library were a mysterious stranger teaches him how to read, and by accident ZED discoveres that the name of his god was from an acient book, "The Wizard of Oz". Aware of the truth, ZED can no longer follow Zardoz blindly, so he and his men create a plan to find out where the mask goes. ZED hides under a load of grain being transported into the Vortex. While in the Vortex. ZED shoots Arthur Frane, the perpetrator of the hoz of Zardoz. The mask of Zardoz thus allows ZED into the Vortex. ZED then destroys the Vortex, which restores mortality to the elite, and grants them the gift of death; The end to their everlasting agony of order, perfection, and boredom.
