Chapter 2

Standard disclaimer: Please don't sue me!

Heero Yuy sat down in front of his computer. He typed Meela Rumsey in and sat back to watch. Although Meela was a Gundam pilot, no one knew much about her. She mostly kept to herself. The only people she really talked to were Noin, and Trowa.

He looked down at his screen. It said:

Name: Meela Toloran Rumsey

Place of birth: Colony C46Y89OOO. (now known as Everest.)

Nationality: American

Age: Approximately 15

Hair color: Dark blond

Eye color: Green

Height: 5’ 6"

Weight:110 lbs

After the Une Foundation came to power, and all the Gundam's disappeared, supposedly destroyed. Meela was trained by a scientist named Marie Slogan, to bring back the Gundams, and fight the Une Foundation. Meela is rumored to be able to use the ZERO system.

"That’s all?" Heero said, renewing his search. The same thing came up. "Hmm. The Gundams weren’t destroyed though. She came in with Colonel Une as a new Gundam pilot." He shook his head. It didn’t make any sense.

Colonel Une had brought the Gundam pilots back to fight the Une Foundation, then Meela was found and recruited.

He heard a soft sound coming from the room above him. Meela was pacing.

There was a soft knock on Meela’s door.

"Come in." She said stopping her pacing. Heero came in.

"Hello." he said softly.
She cocked her head to one side. "What did I do?"

He shrugged. "Nothing. I was looking you up. Not much on you."

"There is nothing that is not on that description that you need to know." She said meeting his gaze with her cold green eyes.

"There are a lot of gaps in your history."

She laughed. It was harsh sounding. "All those gaps are irrelevant." She turned to him. "All of my past is irrelevant. All you need to know about my history is that it is history."

"Well, if you work with us then those gaps are not irrelevant."

"When someone with authority tells me, I might consider it."

"You don’t know what happened in those gaps do you?" He asked.

Meela turned around and stared out the window. "Do you have anything else to say?"

Heero turned and left, the door closed with a resounding thud. Meela sat for a second remembering the brief painful flashes. What had happened?

Relena walked down the hall to her office thinking about the Gundam pilot Meela Rumsey. Who was this girl? A soft sound filled her ears. It sounded like a piano.

"What is that?" Relena said quickening her pace heading for the ball room, where she found a surprising sight.

Meela sat down at the piano in the ball room. She rubbed her hands along it and smiled. She lifted the lid and placed her hands on the keys. Suddenly it all came flooding back to her. She did know how to play the piano. She started playing. She had no idea what the song was called but it kept flooding out of her hands like someone else controlled them. When it ended, more songs came to memory.
When she finished the fifth song, it brought back a feeling that she had not felt in a long time. Love. She remembered being loved, she remembered a laugh that chased away all her fears. "Mother..." She whispered. She reached out but the laugh was fading away. Then it was gone, just another distant memory.

Relena watched this girl, who seemed to have no emotions. Suddenly Meela slammed down the keyboard lid down and stood up. " How long have you been there, Miss Relena?" She said softly still facing the piano.

" Not long. Your mother taught you how to play the piano?" Relena asked approaching her.

Meela didn’t answer so Relena continued the conversation.

"The last one you played was very beautiful. It was sad though. Do you know what it is called?"

"No. I don’t know what any of them are called." Meela said, her head down.

"It must have been terrible, being taken from your family so young."

"Look who’s talking." Meela said, her sharpness returning.

"No, not really. I was given a good home, someone who loved me. You..."

"Who’s to say that I didn’t have exactly what you had?" Meela said turning around and leaving.

"Meela! If you’d just..." Relena started but was cut off by the door slamming.

Meela left the room. Running again. She thought. She wanted to leave the Cinq Kingdom far behind and never look back, but something stopped her. She went outside and walked over the grounds to one of the benches that were placed around the gardens. The moon was almost full and it reflected off the lake that was in the middle of the gardens. "Beautiful," she murmured. "What the heck am I doing.

Beautiful?" She said shaking her head in disgust "This place must be getting to me."

"She’s at the Cinq Kingdom with Miss Relena and Heero?" Noin said anxiously.

"Yes!" Colonel Une said exasperatedly. "Noin, What’s going on?"

"It’s a dream that I keep having. Meela kills Miss Relena."

"What?"

"In the dream. Relena was killed by Meela."

"Noin, Meela is a Gundam pilot. She would do nothing to harm Relena Darlian. Plus the fact that she probably doesn’t want to get on the bad side of Heero." Colonel said smiling.

"Well, it wasn’t her exactly. In the dream it was like she was a shell, like she was being used."

"Well, Meela was trained to be like that. Do you think this means something Noin?"

Noin shook her head. "I’m not one to go with dreams, but this was so vivid and reoccurring, it might mean something."

"Lets not jump to conclusions. Relena will be fine with Heero there. I’ll ask Duo to go down there. He grabs at any chance to get out of here. Personally I don‘t blame him. Since that colony was destroyed, the moods around here have been a little strained."

"Yeah. And Meela blames herself," Noin said standing.

"I’ve noticed," the colonel said.

Duo flew through space in Deathscythe. He was thinking about what Colonel Une had said. It didn’t make any sense, especially since she didn’t explain herself. He replayed the conversation through his head.

"Duo, I need you to go down to the Cinq Kingdom."

"Love to. When and why?"

"You’ll go now. And I need you to keep an eye on Meela."

He frowned. "Why?"

"Relena’s life has been in danger lately and Meela is a wild card," the colonel had said and left without explaining more.

He felt weird about what he had been assigned. Meela was a friend. At least as friendly as you could get with her. He didn’t want to be spying on her and didn’t see why she had sent him when Heero was there.

"This whole thing is messed up." He said shaking his head as he entered Earth’s atmosphere.

Meela watched as Deathscythe landed and Duo hopped out.

"Hey Meela! Heero! How's it goin’?"

"What are you doing here?" Meela asked.

"Hey man, you try to be stuck up there with Wufei and Trowa. Not much for conversation. I missed you guys." He said coming over to Meela and Heero.

"Well sorry to disappoint you Duo, but I was looking forward to a vacation away from you." Meela said turning to leave but Duo followed right on her heels.

"So how ya been Meela?"

"I’ve been fine," Meela said, not looking at him.

He paused. "I’m drawing a blank on conversational material here Meela. I could use some help."

"Is this the first time in your life that you have run out of things to say?"

"Yep, I think so. You seem to have that effect on me. In fact I think the temperature drops when

you enter the room."

"When you enter the room, it suddenly becomes empty."

"Ooo low blow. You’re gonna pay for that one." He paused. "Give me a second and I’ll think of something."

Meela stopped and opened the door to her room. "You do that Duo. Good night," She said and slammed the door.

"Don’t worry! I’ll think of something!" Duo yelled from behind the door.

Meela leaned up against the door and smiled. She liked Duo. He had a way of lightening the

mood, but it still puzzled her why he was here.

Next day

"Hey Meela! I thought of something! It took me all night but I thought of something."

"All night huh? Well it had better be good," Meela said facing him.

"Ok here it is. You said ‘When you walk into the room, it suddenly becomes empty.’ Well my response to that is they’re just making sure they don’t get in my way because I might do something drastic." He said grinning.

Meela couldn’t help but laugh. "Duo, that is pathetic."

"I know but I made you laugh. That was my goal," He said walking into the conference room.

Meela shook her head and stepped in after him.

Heero glanced up at them. "You two need to report back up to Peacemillion. Your Gundams are ready to launch."

"Aww man! I just got here!" Duo complained.

"Understood. Come on Duo." Meela said grabbing Duo by the arm and pulling him out before he could say anything else.

Meela recalibrated her navigations systems for space as soon as they left the atmosphere. For a while they flew in silence, then Duo’s voice came over the speakers.

"Come on Meela. Sing with me. ‘Row, row, row your Gundam, gently out in space. Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a..." He paused.

"You don’t even know the words?"

"No, I’m trying to think of something that rhymes with space," he replied. "Uhh, case, base... race! Life is but a race!" he finished triumphantly.

"Duo, you made the right career decision when you decided not to be a singer."

"Hey I thought that was good."

"Yeah whatever." They flew in silence again for a while but Meela knew it wouldn’t last long.

"Then, you don’t want to sing something else?"

"No Duo. I don’t."

"All right. I’ll sing to myself."

"Duo, you do that and I’ll chop you up into little pieces and then incinerate those with my engines just to make sure you never sing again."

"You make your self very clear Meela."

"That's good. Now shut up."

Meela was in the lounge eating, when Wufei entered and sat down across from her. She glanced up and found him staring intently at her.

"Can I help you with something Wufei?"

He looked back down. "No, you can’t," he said crossly.

"Excuse me, oh dishonored one," Meela retorted before she could think of what she was saying.

Wufei looked up with rage showing clearly in his eyes.

"What did you say?" His voice was low and threatening.

"You heard me Chang," Meela said, staring right back. What was she doing? She didn’t want to provoke Wufei.

He stepped up in her face. "If we didn’t need you, I’d kill you where you stand woman."

"I’d like to see you try," she replied. She made to turn away, then slammed the heel of her hand into Wufei’s jaw.

Wufei’s head snapped back and he fell to the ground. Meela stared, horrified for a moment. With a cry of rage, Wufei got up and launched himself at her. Suddenly, all emotion drained from Meela, leaving her with only a single thought. You know what to do, a voice in her head stated.

Time seemed to slow down and she easily parried Wufei’s attack. She grabbed his arm and wrenched him back, bringing her foot up to hit the back of his head. He barely flinched and pulled himself out of her grasp. He noticed an odd light in her eyes, but choose to ignore it.

She attacked this time and they traded blows, neither able to hit the other. Wufei kicked at her stomach but she grabbed his foot, absorbing the shock with her hands and spinning him to the ground. He quickly rolled backwards onto his feet as Meela flew at him, getting one leg behind his neck and the other on his stomach and wrenched him to the ground. She landed on her knees and as Wufei tried to roll over, she whipped out her knife with lightning speed and stabbed it at his exposed throat, stopping a millimeter from puncturing his skin.

Wufei stared into her expressionless face, and suddenly she blinked. Emotions came rushing back to her and she stared in horror at the knife.

He flipped her onto her back, yanked the knife from her hand and put it to her throat. She didn’t resist. She heard the lounge door open and saw Duo and Trowa step in. There was a pause.

"What’s going on?" Trowa asked quietly.

"She attacked me and almost killed me," Wufei replied calmly. "I believe I should kill her now."

"Wait," Trowa said. He drew his gun and pointed it at her. "Let her up."

Wufei looked angrily at Trowa for a second, then slowly got to his feet. Meela sat up, still looking pale.

"Meela?" Trowa prodded.

She shook her head. "He’s right, I did almost kill him. I-I- I don’t know what happened though, it’s like I was dreaming or something. I saw it all happening, but I had no control over it." It suddenly occurred to her. "I need a CAT scan," she said walking to the door.

"You’re telling me," Duo remarked as she passed.
