There Was a Time . . .
There was a time when a simple smile
Could help me make it
Through every trial
And a warm embrace
Could dry trickling tears
From my face.
There was a time when I didn’t feel so all alone
And a guiding hand would be there
To point the way home
A time when agony wasn’t felt by my heart
And best friends and boyfriends promised to stay with me;
Never to part,
But this is a time where smiles come no more,
And the room I’m imprisoned
Has a tightly locked door.
My tears, on the verge of a constant flood,
And the love in my heart
Weakens with every ‘Thud!’
Yet, heedless of the suffering I’ve endured, I still hope
Someone, out there, has the key
To help me cope
And to set me free.
