Age Levels In Girl Scouting

Age levels divide girls into manageable groups. With age levels, it is easier to plan activities because what may be interesting for the 5-year-old probably won't work for the 12-year-old, or the 17-year-old. The age levels for Girl Scouting in the United States are as follows:

Daisy
5-6 years old
*Note: This group is the only group of girls not allowed to sell cookies.

Brownie
6-8 years old

Junior
8-11 years old

Cadette
11-14 years old

Senior
14-17 years old

Adult
17 and over
*Note: Adults are also not allowed to sell cookies.

The Girl Scout uniform also depends on your age level. Here are descriptions of the uniforms by age level:

Daisy
Blue smock

Brownie
Brown vest or sash

Junior
Green vest or sash

Cad/Sr.
Khaki vest or sash
Light blue Cadette blouse
Navy blue Sr. blouse

Every Girl Scout is entitled to wear a certain amount of insignia. These vary slightly by age level.

Membership pin: Daisies and Brownies each have a different pin, but Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, and Adults have a choice of two pins (both different from the Brownie and Daisy pins). The first choice is the traditional version, shaped like a trefoil, which features the American eagle and shield, part of the Great Seal Of The United States Of America. It was introduced in 1912, when the Girl Scouts was founded. The second choice is the contemporary version, also shaped like a trefoil, which features 3 girl's profiles. It was introduced in 1980. The Daisy pin is shaped like a trefoil and features a daisy in the middle. The Brownie, also shaped like a trefoil, features a Brownie elf in the middle.

WAGGGS/World Trefoil pin: This pin is worn by Girl Scouts/Guides in every part of the world. It shows that you are a member of the World Associaton of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, or WAGGGS. It is shaped like a circle, with a blue background and a gold trefoil in the center.

Insignia tab: The insignia tab is an arrow-shaped piece of felt which pins to the front of your vest/smock or your blouse (if you are wearing a sash). It is always worn on the left side above your heart, and can be worn on regular clothing also. It holds the World Trefoil Pin and the membership pin. The colors of the insignia tab vary by age level. Daisies wear a yellow tab, Brownies wear a brown tab, Juniors wear a green tab, and Cadettes and Seniors wear a navy blue tab.

Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. identification strip: This patch identifies you as a Girl Scout. The strip for Juniors, Cadettes and Seniors has a white background with blue edging. It features the words "Girl Scouts U.S.A.". The strip for Brownies has a brown background with brown edging, but features the same words as the Jr/Cad/Sr strip. Daisies do not wear this form of insignia.

Council identification strip: This patch tells others what council you come from. Each council has a name, which is printed on this patch. The Jr/Cad/Sr strip has a white background with blue edging, while the Brownie strip has a brown background with brown edging. As with the national ID strip, Daisies do not wear this.

Troop crest: The troop crest is an oval patch which can feature a selection of birds, flowers, and other items. Girls in each troop decide on their troop crest by voting. Only a few designs are available, and girls must choose one of those. Daisies do not wear this insignia.

Troop numerals: Troop numerals are patches with numbers on them that tell others what troop you belong to. A troop can have anywhere from 2-4 numbers, which are assigned by the council when your troop forms, and colors of the numerals vary depending on your age level. Brownies have brown patches with white numbers, Juniors have light green patches with white numbers, and Cadettes and Seniors have dark green patches with white numbers. Daisies do not wear this insignia.

Membership stars: Each membership star on your uniform means that you have been a registered Girl Scout for one year. The membership stars themselves are always gold, but they are placed on different disks depending on your age level at the time you earned the star. Blue is for Daisies, green is for Brownies, yellow is for Juniors, white is for Cadettes and red is for Seniors. Daisies do not wear this insignia, since they are only registered for one year as Daisies.
