Juliette Gordon Low

Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low founded Girl Scouting in 1912, when she was 52. She suffered from a hearing impairment that left her almost totally deaf, but that didn't stop her from being an artist or flying an airplane! She believed women could do anything, which was very unconventional thinking for her time.

The idea for Girl Scouts came in part from her friends Sir Robert Baden-Powell, and his sister Agnes Baden-Powell, who founded Boy Scouts & Girl Guides, respectively, in Scotland.

In January of 1927, Daisy lost her battle to cancer. Despite her death, the Girl Scout movement was still a success. In 1927 there were 167,925 Girl Scouts, and today there are over 3.5 million (including adults)!
