The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot

Meet Mia Thermopolis. She's average. She's pretty sure that she's unpopular, flat-chested, and flunking algebra. Then her mother starts dating her algebra teacher and her father goes and reveals that he's the prince of some place called Genovia. And so Mia is now Amelia Mignonette Grimaldi Thermopolis Renaldo, Princess of Genovia. Then Mia has to start "princess lessons" with her Grandmére, who has tattooed eyeliner and calls Mia a hooker. One newspaper article and the most popular (and the meanest) wants to be Mia's best friend. Then the cutest boy asks her to the Cultural Diversity Dance. A twisted Cinderella story. Possibly suggestive for younger readers.
