The Moorchild by Eloise McGraw

The Moorchild is the story of Moql. Moql lives in the moors. She is a Moorfolk child. She isn't exactly human. She is more like a dwarf, or a fairy. Anyway, one day, Moql is doing her normal chores when a farmer comes upon her. She tries to change into a rock, disappear, turn gray, make herself as small as a mouse, anything. But she discovers that she can't do anything. She is caught, but breaks free. She is happy, but the community she belongs to is not. They say that she is half human and is a danger to the society. They banish her. They "exchange" her. She is switched for a human baby, given to parents called Anwara and Yanno. They call her Saaski. For the first few years of her life, (she becomes a baby again) she kicks and screams and refuses to adjust to human life. But, as she grows older, her past becomes a blur. She soon forgets her Moorfolk heritage. But, also in the human world, she is an outcast. Her hair floats around her head like a cloud. Her eyes change color with her moods. Her fingers and toes are much longer than anyone else's. She is faster than anyone else. She plays the bagpipes without any lessons. She is hurt by touching iron, or salt, or St. John's Wort. For all these things, she is laughed at and jeered at. She is teased and feared. She is pushed and isolated. But everything is fine, until she starts to see thing that others do not. She sees strange markings that she understands. No one else can see these markings, much less know what they mean. She sees the other Moorfolk that are usually invisible. She also catches small blurs of memory, things that seem familiar. And soon she remembers. All of it. She sets of on a quest to bring Anwara, her "mumma", the gift she truly wants...
