The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia Wrede

The Enchanted Forest Chronicles Book One: Dealing with Dragons
Dealing with Dragons is about Princess Cimorene. Cimorene is totally bored with being a princess. She has tried just about everything to get rid of her princess lessons. She replaced ettiquite with fencing, embroidery with Latin, and sewing with cooking. But it is the last straw when her parents try to marry her off to Prince Therandil, a boring, completely unintelligent man. So she runs away and volunteers to be a captive princess in a dragon community. She lives with a dragon named Kazul. She cooks and cleans in Kazul's elaborate cave. She also meets and becomes friends with another dragon's captive princess named Alianora (Alianora didn't choose to be captive; she just got kidnapped)and a stone prince. But her little adventure becomes quite a bit different when she becomes involved in a wizards' plot to steal a powerful crystal and take over the dragon kingdom. She and her friends realize they must help. They also realize there is a traitor within the dragon community...
This is a wonderful first book for such a wonderful series.

The Enchanted Forest Chronicles Book 2: Searching for Dragons
Another excellent book in this series. For those who loved the action of the first book, you may be slightly disappointed, though. This book focuses more on humor and romance. Cimorene also stars in this book, but we also meet several new characters, such as King Mendanbar: King of the Enchanted Forest, and Telemain, a magician. In this book, Kazul is kidnapped by the wizards. Just as Cimorene is setting off to rescue Kazul, she bumps into Mendanbar, the King of the Enchanted Forest, who is having wizard troubles of his own. The wizards have been soaking up magic from the Enchanted Forest, thus leaving big barren pieces of land! But what do the wizards want this magic for? I can guarantee that, yes, there still is adventure, but not as much as the first book. There are the many surprises that make this series fun, a lot of magic, romance, and even a good deal of humor. Careful readers will notice the references to classic fairy tales. An excellent sequel!
