Darkness Reigns LARP: House Rules: Character Improvement

Experience Points:

At the end of every session each player will receive two experience points for participating (of course zero points if you do not show up). To get both experience points you need to be present (and findable) for the majority of the session, otherwise you will receive only one point. In past games I have seen people show up, hang around for about an hour (doing nothing), then leave... just to get the two experience for their character. It isn't fair to those whom are actively participating in game when this occurs. Please use the honor system when it comes to this. Those found breaking this rule will be handled by the storytellers on a case by case basis. Saving your experience points is fine, but keep in mind the restrictions on spending them (see the below sections for more on these restrictions).

Spending Experience Points:

You can use your experience to improve your character in a variety of ways. Below are the costs of improving various aspects of your character.

Learning/Increasing Disciplines:

All disciplines require time to learn. You can choose one of two ways to do this. First, you can gradually spend xp after each session and log it on your session/xp sheet that you are learning the discipline in question (once the xp cost is met you will be able to use the discipline at the beginning of the next session). The second way is if you have saved up a lot of xp and then decide to learn a discipline with it. You log on your session/xp sheet that you are learning a discipline and that you are expending the full xp cost. You will then have to wait a number of full sessions after this before you can use the discipline, depending on what level it is (2 sessions for basic, 3 sessions for intermediate, 5 sessions for advanced). The storytellers will make a notation on the future session that you can begin to use it. This is to keep characters from suddenly "manifesting" disciplines instantaneously and to encourage players to spend their xp after every session.

All characters can learn or increase their "in clan" disciplines at normal cost with one exception, if you are 9th generation or higher you must find a teacher to learn advanced level disciplines. Those of 8th generation are not hindered in this way due to the strength and potency of their blood. A teacher is defined as someone who has the advanced level you are looking to learn and is willing to teach it to you (a high enough rating in the "Mentor" background will also suffice). Make sure to log on your session/xp sheet who your teacher is (it is also a good idea for them to put on their session/xp sheet that they are teaching you) since the storytellers will be verifying this information. A character can only teach one student (a single discipline) at a time and a character can not teach disciplines to others if he is currently learning a discipline from someone else.

In order to learn "out of clan" disciplines a character must have a teacher for each individual level that he would like to learn. Their is one modification in defining a teacher in this case, in addition to the definition in the previous paragraph they can only teach up to the level below what they currently have.

Thaumaturgical Rituals, Wards, Glyphs and Sigils will be handled in a similar way as explained above.

Learning/Increasing Abilities:

Most abilities can be self-taught and increased on ones own, however, some require a teacher to attain the first level (from then on the character can increase the ability on his own through experimentation/trial and error). A teacher can be anyone with at least two levels of ability that you want to learn. Please use some common sense when it comes to this (i.e. it is highly unlikely that you would be able to learn the Medicine ability on your own between sessions). Lore abilities can only be learned or increased with storyteller approval. Each ability can only be increased by 1 point between session. In order to gain a specialization in an ability after character creation you must have at least two levels of the ability in question (and storyteller approval).

Increasing Attributes/Traits:

Each category of Traits (Physical, Social, Mental) can only be increased by a maximum of 2 points between sessions.
