Pride by Brenda Antrim -- I love Andromeda. I saw the promo for the series which described it as a "rockin' space adventure" and thought oh, I am so not watching this, but then the show sucked me in by actually being good. By the time I stopped staring at Keith Hamilton Cobb (Nietzchean mercenary Tyr Anasazi) long enough to notice this fact, I had seen the episode "Double Helix" which made me realize that a) Captain Dylan Hunt and his Nietzchean former first officer Gaheris Rhade had had a thang going, and that b) Dylan and Tyr were fated to relive that archetypal relationship in all its angst and complexity. Or at least to have the kind of sex the very concept of Nietzcheans makes one imagine them (Tyr and Dylan, and Nieztcheans in general) having. Since that time I have been looking for a story which made explicit all of the above.
This is that story. Or at least close enough that I could ignore the few minor flaws in word choice, metaphor, and to some extent Tyr's characterization (his decision to go to Dylan isn't explored in nearly enough depth, and I'm not sure I find the logic behind it believable) and reread it many times because it made me really happy. For its outstanding portrayal of Dylan alone, "Pride" is not to be missed.
