Configuring outlook Express to work with Web-based MSN email
If you have downloaded MSN Explorer (MSN Internet Access version 6), your email will be converted from POP3 email to web-based email. After this conversion, Outlook Express will no longer function with the POP3 settings.
There have been some issues with not being able to access email in MSN Explorer, and after uninstalling the software, you are no longer able to access email at all. Microsoft used to have a feature that allowed you to "roll back" to POP3, but they have since removed that feature.
Fortunately, there is a solution that allows you to keep the web-based email AND access it through Outlook Express (and possibly Microsoft Outlook, although I have not tried it yet...)
The easiest way to fix this is to delete the email account and re-create it from scratch
This is done from the Tools=>Accounts menu. Click on the "Mail" tab and remove the MSN mail account. After removing it, you will need to click on "New=>Mail" from the right hand side. Follow the prompts for your name, email address, etc.
When it asks for the Mail Server type, select the "HTTP" server type and leave the second box as "Other". For the server name, type the following:
http://oe.msn.msnmail.hotmail.com/cgi-bin/hmdata
Click next and it SHOULD automatically fill in your account name, such as "username". On this screen, you need to add the "@msn.com" after the username in order for it to work.
Type your password and make sure the "Save Password" option is checked, but DO NOT check the "Log on using secure password authentication" option. Click on "Next" and then "Finish".
From the "Accounts" screen, simply click on "Close" and it will prompt you to download a list of folders from the mail server-click on "Yes" and it should download your folders and any new email messages you may have.
