Chapter 18: Mirax, Droids, and Other Capital Ventures

Trapps and I went with Mirax the next morning aboard The Pulsar Skate to examine the condition of the Black Flag itself.  Amazingly, Coruscant take offs are not as complicated on landings.  You are given an initial course heading and vector via the ground control at the local spaceport.  That is then routed through a regional, then sector and finally global control.  From there, you are told which of the five clear from debris windows where the planetary shields are not engaged at the moment, to leave from.  After we entered a high orbit, Mirax flew us into one of the three space platforms cavernous hangars.

“That’s Medium Cargo Transport!” I shouted.

“Oh, yeah.  Since I like you and Gabi so much I forgot to tell you that when you bought the salvage rights to this place, you bought all the stuff they couldn’t bring with them at evacuation,” Mirax said.

“So, we got the junk, broken and things needing repair?” Trapps hissed.

“Yes,” Mirax answered.  “I’ve just checked around the hangar areas and done fly-bys.  I’ve never been inside, so I can’t tell you what you have and don’t.”

“Finders keepers I guess.  We’ll try and send personal affects like holos back to the family or owner if possible,” I said.  “How many zero-g suits do you have, Mirax?  I want to comb over this place as much as possible, and would be willing to pay you for your assistance.”

“Five.  Even a large one to fit Trapps here, and you are going to pay me at the rate of two thousand credits and hour.”

 “Ten”

 “Seventeen-fifty.”

 “Twelve-fifty.”

“Fifteen-hundred, plus the any antiques or valuables I come across.”

“Only if they seem to be hidden and not of family/clan/tribal orgin.”

“Accepted.  Shall we go to the airlock gentlemen?”

We agreed for our safety and just for practicality, to limit our search to one the sections and decks immediately surrounding the hangar areas.  We’d limit our search to two hours and keep an open comm.-channel to each other.  We’d then head back to The Skate, recharge our oxygen supply then head to the next hangar facility and search the area surrounding all three leaves or the platform.

Salvage operations Trapps had taught me were to be a total mixed bag.  What you do find excites you, but you then realize the amount of work, parts, money and labor that you are going to have to put in to the salvaged object to get it to work close to original specifications.  That was the case all over The Black Flag.  We found the hulls of two Medium Transports.  What they were missing were hyperdrives, sublight power, bridge control pods, and most of their sublight engine exhaust manifolds.  Each hangar seemed to have two working utility tugs and a heavy lifter.  There were countless cargo containers ranging from those in near perfect condition that met the definition of box.  We needed to have some sort of climate control in some of them for things like foodstuffs, live animal transports, and some sort of converted work place break lounges to recharge and rest your zero-g utilty suits.  That was the pleasant surprise.  Each hangar had approximately fifty to seventy-five zero-g utility suits that seemed to be in working order.  We found four TIE Interceptors in various states of repair.  One was missing a solar panel array, another the cockpit window, another a power source, still another flight control stations.  Tool sets were plentiful as were small parts such as power couplings and transfer circuit junction boxes.  There were some power cell recharging station too.  Perhaps the most pleasant surprise was my discovery two decks above the second cargo hangar.  That was the droid recharging station.  There were twenty or so astromechs.  There were also several ASP worker droids that could do heavy lifting.  There were five 8D8 industrial droids and three protocol droids of different designs.  Also, there were fifteen power droids and 6 MSE messenger droids.  All seemed to be in stand-by/powered down mode.

I returned to the Skate happier I had been the whole day.  The droids meant that initially we had a crew and time to build up an actual work force of sentients.  There would be help for Trapps provided we could memory wipe the droids and have more help than just Trapps and Chief working to restore the life support.  I would need to get Squared up here and get myself back down there to finish negotiations with the shop owners.  Most importantly I needed to get down to the planet to talk to the Chief and have her help me think this out.

On the return trip, Trapps and I silently compared the notes we took on the data pad.  His seemed to lack the optimism of mine.  I purposefully left off the bit of information I had.  I instead enclosed a small note to Trapps on my data pad.  I trusted Mirax enough that she wasn’t going to sell us out, but then again, I also knew she would try and take back the deal if she knew that we were going to have enough help assuming we could wipe the memories, get the parts, and have at least sixty percent of them operational.

I think I have the answer to your questions on what will help you get the station ready for transit.  I also know who can help with repairs.  I need you to be able to get it done on your own.  Garrik and I will stay planet side.  No idea what The Chief is going to do or want to do yet.

Trapps just shot me a weird look.  Being the wife of a famed member of Rogue Squadron obviously had its perks.  Mirax was allowed to set back down on Coruscant with half the amount of hassle that we were given.  As we were departing the Skate I had one final offer for Mirax.

“Can you arrange for us to have our travel visas extended and drop Trapps off on the platform.  I’d also like to see what we could do about paying to keep the Monkey’s Tail docked here for a few more weeks,” I said.

“I can try.  No promises.  I’ll call in some favors.  It’s going to cost you, about hundred thousand for that firm,” she said dryly.  “Consider me dropping off Trapps as part of the deal.  I’ll even try to get you a travel permit so you can run your ship and people back and forth.  Docking, well I’ll charge you for half the monthly fee plus fiteen percent,” she offered.

“Make it ten and I’ll take that deal and possibly give you a tour of the place when it’s all done,” I offered.

“Alright.  Sure, you found something up there you aren’t going to tell me.  So I may as well let you get it all ready for your ever-expanded business.  Just as long as you promise that you’ll let me sell you and Gabi some decorations for your quarters.”

“Not a problem.  You can get me the best.  That’s what I want for her.”

“That’s why I’m helping you.  I pretty much see you two as Corran and me if he weren’t a fighter pilot.”
