Dry Kill Logic "The Darker Side of Nonsense" (Roadrunner Records)
As much as you may think Dry Kill Logic sounds like every other new metal band out there, don't let your first impression fool you. I actually thought the same thing the first time I heard this CD. But after listening to it once or twice, it began to grow on me.
While their musical style does have hints of the older days of Korn (before they mixed in the rap), they do also sort of present their own style on a whole. It's a rather distinctive sound, and it's one that will definitely set them apart from the rest of the bands in this new metal craze. I feel it will also benefit them in the long run as well.
Perhaps what drew me most into the sound of Dry Kill Logic was their lyrics. The first song "Nightmare" hits you right in the gut with the chorus "Me + U = Nightmare", but it also has a break down toward the end which offers a repeated screaming of "You worthless piece of shit". Beyond that, we get into the second song called "Feel the Break" which starts with the line "You remember, I will always see you for the liar you are". The chorus of the same song continues on with "This won't get the best of me".
The words continue on with a some what negative approach towards people, but in the end a kind of positive attitude... A "you may have fucked me, but you won't destroy me" take which I really like. Perhaps one of the stand out tracks on this release is "Weight" which boasts a great verse: "The pressure grates on me yet I am loathe to find some sort of middle ground to work at a compromise. You'll never understand what all this does to me. I'm keeping you alive, and yet it's killing me".
Also, to the surprise and delight of me, this CD ends with a song called "Goodnight" which is a beautiful acoustic number that shows this band actually does have musical talent and isn't just a rip off of everything else out there.
Fans of the Ozzfest-new metal genre bands will definitely dig this, while metal-hardcore kids should like it as well. I like it.
