%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% % _____ __ __ _____ ___ % % / \\ \/ /|_ _| / _> % % | | | | \ / | | | (_ % % |_|_|_| /_/ |_| \___> % % % % http://mytc.cjb.net/ % % % %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Preface: ======== In this text file I will try to explain field phreaking; what it is and how to do it. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Field Phreaking: ================ Field phreaking is one way a phreaker can obtain information or get free telephone calls, whether it be by looting/trashing or biege boxing. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Field Phreaking Kit: ==================== A field phreaking kit is a necessity if you wish to be a successful field phreaker. One such kit should at least consist of the following: * Backpack: Used to carry your equipment and anything you find while looting/trashing. Get a nice one; duffle bags aren't really nice although they can carry a lot, they aren't very helpful when running. * Test phone: A test phone is commonly know as a biege box. It is extremely important if you plan on doing any sort of biege boxing. See the Biege Boxing section for more details. * Ratchet Set: Used to open many telco boxes. The most common ones are 3/8", 3/16", and 7/16". * Screwdrivers: Used to open many things. Get medium and large screwdrivers, and a phillips head too. * Wire cutters/strippers: Used to cut/strip wires. * Pliers: Misc. uses. * Pocket knife: Misc. uses. * Penlight: Great because it is nice and small and very useful for night work. Radio Shack has a clip light which attaches to the rim of a hat/helmet etc... and is very useful. * Flashlight: Used to supply lots of light. Put it in your pack if you have enough room in your pack. * Gloves: Used to make sure you don't get shocked or leave finger prints. * Pencil & Paper: Write down locations, notes, numbers, etc... Some optional materials I carry are: * Rain pancho: Used for rain protection. * Bandana/Surgical mask: Make for easy breathing in dusty areas. * Mace: Used in self-defence. * Fake telco ID: Used to fool common citizens you work for MaBell. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Looting/Trashing: ================= Looting and trashing is a great way to get information about your local telephone company such as telco test numbers, type of equipment in use, employee's names, and much more. Some telco buildings to go looting/trashing at are COs, truck yards, billing offices etc... just go somewhere where there will be dumpsters or telco trucks. Before going looting/trashing you should plan everything out. Go to the telco buliding you plan on looting/trashing at in the day. Take note of where the dumpsters are, where the trucks are, if there are windows in the building, if there are any cameras, if there are any day guards, if once inside are you visible from the road, etc... Now go back at night and see how everything looks. Try to figure out what time all employees leave, if there ar night guards, etc. Now plan a few other things like what time will you arrive? You should be there at night. How will you get there? Car is obviously the best. Who is going? Take no less than 2, and no more than 5. Who is going in and who is going to be lookout? How will you get in? If at all possible, avoid fence cutting. How long will you stay? Stay no longer than 120 min. How will you leave? If you have a car picking you up, plan that out. Where will you sort what you find? etc... Also bring a flashlight and a backpack. Bring trashbags to carry your goods in if you have a car. Dress geeky just in case you get caught, you can say you were looking for wire and spare paper for school or something, When inside, make as little noise as possible. Find the dumpster and jump in. Telco dumpsters are fairly clean except for coffee grounds. If using a flashlight, produce as little light as possible, it looks wierd seeing light shinning out of a dumpster at 12 in the morning. Grab anything in the dumpster that looks like it might be useful. Don't examine papers, just grab and put them in your pack. When searching through trucks, don't take anything you don't *really* want and don't take more than one piece of equip. per truck. Also go sparingly on getting papers from trucks, take what is going to me most useful to you. The goal is, is to get as much useful stuff as you can without them ever knowing you were there. Thats pretty much all of that, just excersice your common sence and you should succeed. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Biege Boxing: ============= Ever seen the pretty phones the telco linemen carry? Well thats a test phone, also known as a biege box. The reason its called a test phone is because linemen use it to test lines. You will be using it to make free calls or monitoring calls. Now that you are all excited, I will tell you how you can obtain this wonderful device. You can either take one while looting/trashing (see above) or make one. Making a biege box is really easy. To make a biege box you will need a standard telephone. (I will only tell you how to make a simple biege box, use common sense to improve it.) Find the wire coming out of the phone that is supposed to go to the wall's modular jack. It should be at least three feet long for convienience. Cut off the modular jack at one end of the wire. Strip the wire, and there should be two or four small wires inside. Hook the two middle wires to alligator clips, preferably insulated. You now have a test phone! Very easy, indeed. Now to make sure that you didn't screw up go outside and find your telco box. It should say Telephone Network Interface or something of the like. Open it with the appropriate tool(s). When you get it open you should see some 'screws.' These are the terminals for your phone line. Hook the alligator clips to the two top terminals. If you made the biege box correctly, you should get a dial tone, if not, kill yourself. Now that you have this great device you can go to you neighbor's telco box and make free calls. You can goto telco cans and make free calls etc... Read a file on telco cans for more info on 'canning.' But before going beige boxing, plan out where the box or can is, when you are going boxing; go at night dumbass. What you will do if you do get caught, etc...
