The Fifty Greatest Albums In the World

Note: This entire article is my opinion. If you don't like my list, you have that option. I admit I am going to miss a few, I will post them later. Just please, no bitching because (insert pretentious, little known artist's best album here) was left off of the list. If you'd really like to, make your own list and send to to me at XIRemainX@aol.com. I'll be more than happy to post it. Thanks.

THE LIST

50. Two Minute Drill - S/T (?)
One of my favourite ska CDs ever. This is a big compliment coming from someone who generally doesn't enjoy ska at all. It's a shame the broke up. Best songs: 'Hammer', 'Sum of Me, Rest of You'

49. Screeching Weasel - BoogadaBoogadaBoogada
Catchy Simplicity at it's best. Best songs: 'Supermarket Fantasy' and 'Love'

48. Screeching Weasel - Teen Punks in Heat
My two favourite SW albums fall right next to each other on the list, simply because they sounds almost exactly alike. Best songs: 'You're Sorry Now', 'Six Percent'

47. B.B. King - Why I Sing the Blues
I only have this one on tape. Just a great tape to put on and relax to. Best songs: 'Ghetto Woman' and 'The Thrill is Gone'.

46. The Weakerthans - Fallow
They defy genre. I've heard them described best as wimpy-core. Great lyrics. Best songs: 'Confessions of a Futon-Revolutionist' and 'Anchorless'

45. Oasis - What's the Story Morning Glory?
The self-proclaimed "best band ever" only gets one entry into my list, and it's nowhere near the top. Best Songs: 'Wonderwall' and 'Don't Look Back In Anger'

44. Al Di Meola - Casino
Some of the most amazing guitar playing I have ever heard in my lifetime. Pick this one up at most used vinyl shops for a buck or so. Best Songs: 'Egytpian Danza' and 'Chasin the Voodoo'

43. MXPX - Let It Happen
The only entry they are going to earn, and it's almost more as a token of them as a whole than this one single album. Best Songs: 'Move To Bremerton' and 'Begin to Start'

42. Bjork - Post
She's incredibly unique. There's nobody who ever could emulate her if they wanted to. Best Songs: 'Enjoy' and 'Isobel'

41. Lou Reed - Live in Berlin
Lou's only solo performance on the list. Best Songs: 'Heroin' and 'Coney Island Baby'

40. Less Than Jake - Hello Rockview
There's no better CD to listen to when you are sick of living in some bullshit small town. Best Songs: 'Help Save the Youth of America From Exploding' and 'History of a Boring Town'

39. Bob Marley - Legend
Not just for stoners. Best Songs: 'No Woman No Cry' and 'Get Up, Stand Up'

38. Rancid - Life Won't Wait
Street punk at its best. Best Songs: 'Hoover Street' and 'New Dress'

37. Smashing Pumpkins - Pisces Iscariot
Sounds like it was recorded with a TalkBoy (McCauly Caulkin commercials, woooooooooo!). Best Songs: 'Soothe' and 'Pissant'

36. Queen - A Night At the Opera
Bohemian Rhapsody. Enough said.

35. Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
Angry, creepy, and genius. Best Songs: 'The Art of Self-Destruction' and 'March of the Pigs'

34. Pulp - Different Class
Clever and unorthodox. An aquired taste in a way. Best Songs: 'Mis-Shapes' and 'Disco 2000'

33. Pink Floyd - Animals
Listen to this one as one song, even though there are a few listed on the sleeve.

32. A Fire Inside (AFI) - Black Sails In The Sunset
The record where they began to stop playing shitty speedcore and evolved into the theatrical style of music they play today. Best Songs: 'God Called In Sick Today' and 'Clove Smoke Catharsis'

31. The Ataris - Blue Skies, Broken Hearts, Next 12 Exits
A bit sappy, but great nonetheless. Best Songs: 'I Won't Spend Another Night Alone' and 'My Hotel Year'

30. The Beatles - 20 Greatest Hits
A bit lame of me to choose a greatest hits package for a band that was so proflific, but this one has all of the great Lennon songs. Best Songs: 'Yesterday' and 'Let it Be'

29. Green Day - Dookie
Punk (unfortunately) breaks into the mainstream. Couldn't have chosen a better album to ride on the back of though. Best Songs: 'Burnout' and 'Havin' A Blast'

28. At The Drive-In - Relationship of Command
Wow. Best Songs: 'Pattern Against User' and 'One-Armed Scissors'

27. The Benjamins - The Art of Disappointment
Weezer-esque, sappy, catchy. Local band too. Best Songs: 'Couch' and 'Dr. Frank Was Right'

26. Jimi Hendrix - The Ultimate Experience
The name says it all. Best Songs: 'All Along the Watchtower' and 'Star-Spangled Banner'

25. Blur - 13
One of my favourite bands ever. Best Songs: 'Coffee and TV' and 'B.L.U.R.E.M.I.'

24. Pi: The Movie - Soundtrack
This movie would suck without this amazing collection of music. Ok, it wouldn't suck, but it wouldn't have the same effect either. Best Songs: 'Kapol Index' by Autchere and 'P.E.T.R.O.L.' by Orbital

23. Miles Davis - Greatest Hits
So much to choose from with him. So I chose this. Best Songs: 'Seven Steps to Heaven' and 'So What'

22. Bob Dylan - Greatest Hits
Same reason as above. Best Songs: 'Mr. Tambourine Man' and 'Like a Rolling Stone'

21. Weezer - S/T (blue)
No matter what disgusting monster they become, they can't manage to undo this masterpiece. Best Songs: 'No One Else' and 'In The Garage'

20. Art of Noise - Invisible Silence
Described by a friend as frighteningly creepy. That is pretty much it. Best Songs: 'Instruments of Darkness' and 'Peter Gunn'

19. Yesterday's Kids - S/T
Best thing to come out of Wisconsin since cheese... or something. Great memories of watching them rule at Hart Park. Best Songs: 'Na Na Na' and 'On and On' and 'Nothing Gold Can Stay'

18. Superdrag - Regretfully Yours
I foolishly traded this one away. I still have the mp3s to remember. Kicks Weezer in the nuts any day. Best Songs: 'Sucked Out' and 'Destination Ursa Major'

17. Radiohead - Amnesiac
Latest from Radiohead. Daringly experimental. Amazing, but not their absolute best. Best Songs: 'Pyramid Song' and 'Knives Out'

16. Pink Floyd - The Wall
Not their best, but amazing. Best Songs: 'Mother' and 'Another Brick in the Wall Part 2'

15. Pavement - Crooken Rain, Crooked Rain
Pavement rules you and your family pet. Best Songs: 'Stop Breathing' and 'Silent Kid'

14. Trainspotting - Soundtrack
Another movie that needs its soundtrack. Best Songs: 'Perfect Day' by Lou Reed and 'Born Slippy' by Underworld

13. NOFX - The Decline
Seventeen minutes of being cooler than you.

12. Small Brown Bike - Our Own Wars
Hard, but melodic too. Best Songs: 'The Cannons and Tanks' and 'Holiday'

11. Blur - S/T
The Blur CD that started it all for me. Best Songs: 'You're So Great' and 'M.O.R.'

10. Sub City Records - Take Action Sampler
Lame for me to have a sampler in the top ten? Very, very lame. But this is just simply the best songs of the best bands on one of my favorite labels. Best Songs: 'Liberation II' and 'Evolve' by Fifteen and 'Fireball' by Algebra One

9. Tortoise - S/T
Instrumental madness. Best Songs: 'Magnet Pulls Through' and 'Flyrod'

8. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of The Moon
Easily one of the best albums start to finish. Gets better every time. I'm just not seeing/hearing the Wizard of Oz thing though. Best Songs: 'Money' and 'Time'

7. Pavement - Brighten The Corners
Pavement's low-key masterpiece. Best Songs: 'Stereo', 'Shady Lane', and 'Old To Begin'

Andy Warhol and Lou Reed together is a recipe for greatness, and here it is. Best Songs: 'Heroin' and 'I'll Be Your Mirror'

Billy Corgan's masterpiece. Goes from hard to soft with ease. Best Songs: 'Where the Boys Fear To Tread' and 'Bullet With Butterfly Wings'

If you don't have this CD, you need it. Trust me. Best Songs: 'Idioteque' and 'How To Disappear Completely (and never be found)'

3. A Fire Inside (AFI) - The Art of Drowning
AFI finally reaches the perfection Black Sails hints at. Best Songs: 'The Lost Souls' and 'Morning Star'

2. The Weakerthans - Left and Leaving
Lyrical perfection. Best Songs: 'Aside', 'Without Mythologies', and 'My Favourite Chords'

1. Radiohead - Ok Computer
Here it is; the best album ever. Too amazing to describe. Best Songs: 'Paranoid Android' and 'Exit Music (For a Film)'
