Anoka 1992

Date/Time of Sighting: July (first week, not sure of exact day) of 1992 Approximately 3:00AM CDT Place of Sighting: Anoka, MN - near Elk River and St. Francis. Local Evaluation: CE1 Unexplained Type of Report: CE1 - close flyover by large object Date of Report: 13 Feb, 1999 Investigator: Craig R. Lang - Field Investigator, MN MUFON Sighting Background: I was informed of this sighting while interviewing the witness's business partner, regarding another event. After learning of this sighting, I contacted the witness, and arranged an interview. This report is based upon the results of this interview and followup research. This investigation is still in progress and further findings will be included in a subsequent report. Witness Description: The witness is a female, whose present age is 61 (approximately age 55 at time of sighting). She and her husband live in a relatively rural area, north of the Twin Cities, near the towns of St. Francis and Elk River, MN. She has a high school education. She indicates that her health and hearing are good, both now and at the time of the sighting. Her vision is slightly farsighted, correctable to 20/20 with reading glasses. She and a partner run a catering business in the Anoka/St. Francis/Elk River area. Sighting Account: The witness was unable to sleep and was sitting in a chair in her living room at about 1:30 AM CDT. She was nearly asleep when she heard a loud noise to the north of the house, and looked out her living room window (faces north), to see a large object (see sketch below) low to the ground, heading toward the house. . She viewed the object from the underside, and indicated that it appeared to be disk shaped and dark colored, with brilliant red lights, evenly spaced a few feet apart along the rim. The lights did not illuminate the field. There were no other visible features such as "windows", etc. The object initially appeared to be close to the ground, ascending from a corn field across the highway from her house. [Note: She felt that the object initially might have been landed in the field.] The object was rapidly moving toward her house, accompanied by a loud roar, which she said resembled that of the reverse thruster on a commercial jet. . The witness indicates that she was afraid the object would hit the house. However it quickly (nearly instantly) passed overhead (she thought about 20 feet up). She ran to the dining room window (facing south), and observed the object receding into the distance over the field to the south of the house (she felt that it was about 1/4 mile away by this time). The motion of the object was straight and fast. She noted that it remained low (elevation of about two hand-widths at arm's length) in the southern sky. She continued to hear a roar from the object as it receded to the south. The object was quickly lost to sight as it "just faded out". [CL Note: WX not known, could object have passed into cloud layer?] She estimated that the entire sighting lasted only about two seconds. . Object appeared from north of the property, passed over the house and disappeared to the south. Additional Witnesses: No direct secondary witnesses are known to this sighting. However, this event occurred during a wave of sightings which took place in the Northern Anoka / St. Francis / Elk River area, north of the Twin Cities, MN. We are informed that additional witnesses may exist, and are currently attempting to locate them. In addition, the witness in this report felt that object may have landed in the corn field across the highway from her house. It is not known if there were any landing traces observed, etc. We are attempting to contact the owner of the field and adjacent properties, to determine if they may have noticed anything unusual at that time. This investigation is presently ongoing. Weather Conditions: Not known, since exact date not known. Witness indicates that she does not remember WX conditions. Natural and Manmade Phenomena Check: At present, No known natural phenomenon would explain this event. The possibility of a very low flying aircraft must be considered, although the witness was certain that this object was not an aircraft. Also, the sighting location is only a few miles from the Elk River proving grounds used by Honeywell, Inc (now Alliant TechSystems, Inc) to test military ordinance. It might be possible that this event, and other related sightings in the Elk River area, may somehow be associated with this. We are investigating this possibility as part of the ongoing research into the Elk River / St. Francis sightings of 1992/93. Other Possibilities: Assuming that the object is truly anomalous, it may have been ascending from the field across the highway from the witness's house. Thus, it is possible that a sighting or encounter might have occurred to one of the neighboring residents. This possibility is also being explored wherever possible. Home Page
