MEDAL OF HONOR
I bought this game on 12.29.1999. I beat it on 3.26.2000.
In all my time playing videogames, MOH is sincerely one of the most involved, intriguing, well done, and fun to play games I have ever seen.
MOH comes from the mind of Steven Spielberg, fresh off the shooting of "Saving Private Ryan". He did not just tell his Dreamworks team that he wanted a WWII game... He gave them maps and level-by-level designs. He had the whole thing already in his head.
MOH is up there with Blasto, Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider II, Resident Evil II, and Dino Crisis, but it has something that none of the others have. It captures the look, feel, and sound of WWII perfectly.
You will shake. Your mouth will run dry. A cold sweat will beat down your brow. You will choke, your body temperature raised.
This is all on the very first mission.
Metal Gear Solid was written as a game of stealth and espionage, yet it was far easier to run up to a guard and stick your silenced SOCOM pistol into his gut and fire off a few slugs than it was to sneak about along catwalks and in the shadows.
MOH is a game of stealth and espionage. You will dare not lead a glory charge. You will wait the enemy out. You will bunker down, holding your Springfield rifle tight. You will narrow your eyes and point your crosshairs forward, waiting. You will hold your breath, listening to the sound of stormtrooper boots.
You dare not move.
Your heart stops, all focused on the man about to turn a corner. He does. Unaware of an OSS operative in the shadows, he turns. Before he can even see the barrel of your rifle in the thin moonlight, you fire a round into his chest. You follow it up by two more, making sure he won't return fire. Before he's even on the ground, you reload, holding your rifle ever so still.
Yet, the Nazis hear your shots ring out in the night. You hear harsh German shouts and the sounds of more boots... running. You hold your ground, laying a trap. You wait. They rush to their fallen comrade. Still, before they ever get a chance to turn to see you, you fire more shots from your Springfield.
One falls.
Two fall.
A third lifts his gun and fires, his shot tearing into your shoulder.
Faltering, you readjust you Springfield, firing a single round. Your aim's off due to your arm. The Nazi still stands. Quickly, you fire again and again. The soldier falls back.
You stand, picking up their ammunition. You hold your shoulder, hugging the wall. You proceed, slow. With each step, you listen. You can hear them far off in the night. You turn your head around the next corner, two soldiers conversing.
You lift your gun, unseen, and fire a single round. You hit one of the Nazis in the leg.
Quickly, you fall back, holding your rifle tight.
The first German races to meet you, his pistol blazing.
You fire three quick shot, hitting his arm and chest.
He falls.
The second German limps out.
You aim, killing him with a well-paced round.
You step next to him, finding a bandage with his supplies. You wrap it tight around you shoulder and take a breath.
You slip into the night.
I urge you as strongly as I can to go out there and buy this game. Put it in your PSX and play it hard and strong. Do not give up, for god is on your side.
Everything about this game shines with the highest quality. The graphics... The design... The kick of your gun... The ambient sounds... The score...
Never before has WWII been so real. Never before have you fought against an evil so strong and so menacing. Never before have you prayed with a BAR gripped tightly between your fingers.
Go above and beyond the call of duty.
Jimmy Patterson will return...
