Macross Plus
'Macross Plus' is perhaps the pinnacle of the 'Macross' series, surpassed but only by the original 'Super Dimensional Fortress' series.
'Macross Plus' takes place both years and lightyears away from the events of the original series. At first, the only resemblance to 'Macross' are the transforming airplanes. But, then, as you watch, you are drawn in. You gasp when you realize that you've been staring at Zentradi the entire film. You only now understand the full repercussions of Space War One.
Like all of the 'Macross' genre, there is a love story between three people... a love story that ends in heartbreak for one of the three. In the original series, the triangle was between Hikaru Ichijyo (Rick Hunter), Misa Hayase (Lisa Hayse), and Lynn Minmei. In 'Macross Plus', it is between Guld Goa Bowman, Myung Fang Lone, and Isamu Alva Dyson.
And, like all 'Macross' series, music plays a crucial role. In this incarnation, the music is delivered through Sharon Apple, a fully CG singer, who uses Myung as a surrogate.
'Macross Plus' ends in traditional 'Macross' style, brought back to the SDF-1 MACROSS. It ends in fire and song. It ends in hope and love. Not everyone is happy. Not everyone is alive. But, it never works out that way, does it? Sacrifices.
'Macross Plus' is a definitive example of not just 'Macross' but of Japanese animation as a whole. Its story and animation are striking and brilliant.
And, it is dedicated to all pioneers.
Voices.
