Nick's Top Ten Movies of 1999

1. Star Wars: Episode One - The Phantom menace
2. American Beauty
3. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
4. Being John Malkovich
5. Fight Club
6. Princess Mononoke / Iron Giant
7. Dogma
8. Run Lola Run (Lola Rennte)
9. Rushmore
10.The Matrix

Why is Episode One at the number one spot? I'll tell you why. I loved and enjoyed it more than any other film this year. From the irst time I saw it on May 19th to the last time in early September, there was no other movie I'd rather see than The Phantom Menace. Period.

American Beauty would be number one if only Star Wars hadn't come out this year. American Beauty was a better movie than Star Wars. Kevin Spacey was the best he's ever been and possibly the best he ever will be. It's that hard to top his performance as a man who goes through a mid-life crisis that changes everything he knows.

"Lock, Stock" is the movie that knocked us on our asses way back in March. After seeing it, I wrote on The Spectrum's (our hip local theater) message board: "Pulp Fiction + Trainspotting + Reservoir Dogs = Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels".

Being John Malkovich was the smartest and funniest movie of 1999. Fight Club was THE COOLEST movie this year. Iron Giant and Princess Mononoke were the two best animated films I've ever seen.

I may not like Dogma as much as Clerks, but Digma is by far Kevin Smith's best film. Compare the acting. Compare the plots. Run Lola Run was the best thing to come from Germany since...Well, it's been a long time.

Yes, Rushmore premiered in later 1998, but it hit Albany in early 1999. I loved it.

The Matrix will hurt you. Its action is incredible.
