WEAPONS SYSTEMS:

There are two main types of energy weapons, pulse cannons and beam cannons.

Pulse cannons are simple, violent weapons. They don't do long term damage, but they aren't designed to. Their only function is to cause as much random, violent, and nasty physical damage as possible to the hull of a ship.

They do this very well. They tear up the surface of a vessel with uncaring cruelty. This doesn't do long term damage, but it does halt and occupy the target during the confrontation. It takes time and resources to do repairs. Ships can't function with gaping holes in their sides.

The exact opposite of the pulse cannon is the beam cannon, an elegant and surgical blade. Rather than smashing or punching, as with pulse cannons, beam cannons cut into a ship.

A thin, focused beam of energy slices deep into the core of its target, hitting primaries and causing terminal injuries. It does damage that will cripple the target, if it survives.

Both require a large supply of energy to operate. The pulse cannon releases it in short volleys. The beam cannon requires a larger energy reserve to form an unending stream.
