This is an example of a 24-bit BMP image being saved into an applet by AppletPainter. The image is a screen capture from a Win98 system and contains a vast number of colors with a lot of detail. The original file was 2.1 MBytes whereas the applet JAR file that's now downloading is 136K.
Saving the same image as a JPEG with 75% quality would yield a 134K file and using PNG would yield a 162K file. AppletPainter can consistently beat PNG by an 18% compression margin even though both use the ZLIB library for compression!
