German Bombers

The Germans used bombers extensively, particularly at the beginning of the war when they were on the offensive. During the last three years of the war the Germans were fighting primarily a defensive war and had little use for strategic bombing. Most of their air power was focused on fighters defending Germany from Allied bombers.

Dornier Do-17

This bomber was known as the "flying pencil." It was used extensively during the Battle of Britain, but was replaced by more sophisticated bombers after 1940. It was modified for other uses such as night fighting and air to ground missle launching.

The Ju-88 (Stuka)

The Stuka was a dive bomber used with great success early in the war. The Stuka could place it's payload with pinpoint accuracy and was often used in place of artillery during the fast moving "blitzkrieg" operations. The Stuka became obsolete rather early in the war, however, as it proved to be vulnerable to many allied fighters.
