Upon Strolling Down Memory Lane, With Chocolatey Goodness

so i was sitting in my room yesterday,
eating ice cream and looking through my scrapbook,
and i came across this old photograph of you and i --
the one where we're up on my roof and it's summer --
before we shaved our heads.
before you so kindly meat-malleted my heart.
i squinted,
and i strained,
and i studied that old polaroid
for well over an hour.
i prepared myself for the familiar flood of hurt.
i brick-walled myself against all of that,
and as i was stacking up my sandbags
of single-again strength,
i realized --
you don't have the power to hurt me anymore.
it's just a photograph --
one with a big, smeary, rocky road smudge
right over your face.
how appropriate.
