The silence now seems desolate,Back to the Main Index
where once it was my friend.
My soul aches to hear it broken
with your voice or laugh or breath,
for now the quiet with menace watches,
and hurls malicious barbs of thought.
It haunts my mind at wake and rest
with things of nightmares forlorn.
Loneliness has become my companion,
and I don't like him very much --
he reminds me of your leaving
and whispers you won't return again.
I tell him he's a liar, and he laughs back in my face
as he digs his icy fingers into my heart.
And then the craven tormenter shows me
visions from my darkest fear.
Empty, blackened, crumbling to dust,
the phantasms come:
a world without you near.24 March 2004
