These eyes have seen life and death,Back to the Main Index
Dancing together on the battlefield.
They've seen birth and joy,
Pain and sorrow, mingled as one
In places most unexpected.
They've watched the gore
Upon mine own two hands
Dripping bloody on the ground
From the breaths I've been bade to silence.
These eyes have seen horrors
And given witness to great awe,
Seen the darkness and the light
And the shadows in between.
They've followed with me
To walk amongst the gods
And trod beside the dead,
Seen heaven and hell
And even further worlds.
These eyes have stared into the blackened void
And been blinded by whitened fire.
They've beheld the last moments of this dying world
And watched its first faltering steps as well.
These eyes have seen hope
Written in the faces of countless men
And watched hollow oblivion
Play out in a billion others.
They've seen lust and love, hate and reconciliation
And a thousand other things not even human.
These eyes have seen so many things,
And yet they lack for one:
The smiling presence of my soul's true mate
As she gazes deep, unflinching, unrelenting
Into these Heathen eyes.5 December 2006
