I shall never know againBack to the Main Index
the warmth of your smile
or joy of your company.
I could not explain
how this attraction came to be
or why it should affect me thus.
With your passing it becomes moot,
a risk never taken and words left unsaid --
and all for reasons right and noble.
These things at least I know:
that this is what should be,
that though there's a blank and a longing,
this really is what is best.
And so I turn and shut my eyes,
stand silent, and aspire to be unmoved.
Thus is made the long goodbye,
a last farewell to a hope and love
that never could have been.26 November 2006
