Yu-Ghett-Oh! Tournament, January 29th, 2003

After a few weeks of bulljive and planning, I finally got everyone together to play a full-fledged tourney Yu-Ghett-Oh! style...
So a couple of the guys came by, check out our listing of all the folk that came by and represeted. As it turned out, we had 8 people come by, so our leaderboard was pretty easy to set up into brackets. No losing, or else your ass was watching! So with that, we drew numbers for each of the brackets and played 1 full duel each. Here is how it broke down....

Bracket Breakdown

    Karl
    Vern
    John
    Jen
    Darren
    Damion
    Brandon
    Brian

First Round

Match 1: Karl Vs. Vern

Vern and Karl are my students, just as Damion taught me, I passed my training on to them. Both are about even, just that Karl plays mostly Phaoroh's Servant and Vern mostly relies on traps from all sets. So with that, it was time to shed some blood...

Round 1
Vern comes out Ground Collapsing (what did I tell you?) and sics Winged Crown with a Manevolent Nuzzler on Karl (anyone else ever see a Winged Crown in a deck?). Karl pretty much kicks his teeth in with a quiclky-summoned Blue Eyes in 2 following rounds.
Round 2
Vern plays an attack wall with Jirai Gumo. Next round, he upgrades to Judge Man. Karl does the same next round thanks to Ultimate Offering and after a couple of back-and-forths, Karl's Monsters run Vern from the table. No Heart of the Cards for Vernie B. this time. That ass is out, match to Karl.

Match 2: Jen vs John

I played with John last week and he seemed kinda new @ Duel Monsters, but this week, he came with his $hitkickers on and ready to get dirty. Jen was new to me, but not new to dueling, for I quickly saw ol' girl knew what the hell she was talking about. So these two obviously had some tension to work out and besides..er..you know..Yu-Gi-Oh would have to be the PG-13 medium of the evening...

Round 1
Jen quickly goes defense as John begins filling up his field. Jen is packing an Harpy's Bro and he gets out and begins some weed-eating of John's monsters. John manages to sneak in a LaJinn with a Muzzy (Manevolent Nuzzler to you, scrub!) and gets to her LPs. That LaJin grows to a Summoned Skull(a.k.a. Skullie) and gets its beatdown on. Jen HOTCs a Dark Hole and breaks out the Fiend Megacyber. This is a cool card in this situation because besides Goblin Attack Force, what else can they get out that won't hurt them in some way next round?(ala Dark Elf, Jirai) Sweet, we drool as we haven't seen one played yet. John gets a Harpy's Bro with a Nuzzy to blast Cyber, and Jen plays another one! Double sweet!! But it is in vein as John powers his way to vicory with his lady, Dark Elf. First round to John.
Round 2
John card Destructs off top and drops 2 Skullies out of his had. Jen gets Darkfire Soldier 1 & 2 out to get things going. John is shook after 2 rounds of foot-to-ass. With 1200 LP, he attacks with Dark Elf with 2 Reinforcements. Jen plays Gift of Mystic Elf, getting most of it back. John, now with 200LPs. Can he come back? Damn straight! Jen can't play a card, so John Reborns a BEWD and in two rounds, he closes the house. Match to John!!

Match 3: Darren Vs. Damion

Can you feel the tension? The excitement? It is me, the young Jedi apprentice versus the Sith Lord Damion. Its his fault I'm playing Yu-Gi-Oh now. Of course I didn't want to play Damion at all, let alone in the first round! But them's the rules, so let's do this!

Round 1
I love playing this first turn, Jirai Gumo in Attack Mode! He is quickly smashed by an Immortal of thunder with an Axe of Despair. He gets fissured and I run out a Neo w/ Nuzzy, that hits a Kisetai. Next round, I get a Darkfire Soldier out and we prepare to go feast on LPs, but then, oh the horror!! MIRROR FORCE!! Man I Love/Hate that card! Anyway, we both draw a couple rounds and I get a couple monsters up, ready to charge, then BAM! RAEGEKI!! We again get into a plucking spree until I get a Pot of Greed and get a Raegeki of my own. Clearing his defenses and I blast him. Round 1 to Me!!
Round 2
So now, I'm really sweating. If anyone here can run me out in two rounds, its Damion. He's the one here with cards we cant even pronounce in his deck. No sweat, the man lets me go first. Now I'm nervous. I play ol Jirai off top, which he fissures and plays a WOBF to go and attack me, knowing that once smacked down, he was deck diving. I fall for it and he brings out a Hayabusa knight that begins to smack me around. I get up a Dark Zebra to help things out, and gain a bit of ground. I sac up and get out a BEWD adn then equip it with Horn of Uni, bringing it to 3800atk. The beast blasts his attacking monsters till I hit a little speedbump called Cyber Jar. Poof! Now here is where the game was made. With my BEWD destroyed, did my Horn go on the deck before or after I drew for Cyber Jar? I thought I could choose, and would choose the 5 new cards the put Uni back on top. Damion thought it should go first, and so I put it first. Check it out, I got Neo, 7Fish, 2 Nuzzys and my Uni Horn!! Sweet, so now I have 2 juked up beasts breathing down on him, and they molest his 2 monsters. Thank you ladies and gentlemen, good night! I finally breath, having escaped the clutches of my sensei with fair play and a little luck. Bless you, Horn of Unicorn!!

Match 4: Brandon Vs. Brian

If I had to rank us here on playability, my humble top three would be Damion, myself and his cat Brandon. He is like Karl and his deck is very Pharoah Servant heavy, And he is the only one of us whose deck packs the dreaded Jinzo!! So of course his deck has its weight to throw around. On the other side of the table, we had Brian, who while an avid fan of the show, didn't own a single card or had ever played a match. So generously Karl donates his second deck with a few mods so the Rookie could get his feet wet. Damion, having felt my wrath, was his coach as they both hunker down and prepare for the mach with a quick rundown of the rules.

Match 1
Brian wins first choice and elects to jump off. See, now this the $hit im talking about right here. The rookie plays 2 ground collapses out of his hand to start off. Now if we hadn't semi-limited GCollapse, off gate you can't play any monster cards and the other guy is without penalty. That just sucks. Brandon uses his only available slot to play in Def. Brian uncovers a Soldier of Stone the hard way via life point deduction. Brandon then sacrifices for a Skullie and goes off. He then Time Seals the rookie's deck, so now he has to play what he has in hand. He has 2 Javelins down, which negate both of Skullies attacks, now with a Nuzzy. Screw that says Brandon, he plays Tribute of the Doomed, dropped rookie's pants and inserter a stiff Skullie to him A couple of rounds and he's down. Round 1 to Brandon.
Round 2
Not bad, rookie, not bad. But you in the Yu-Ghett-Oh league now, boy! We ain't gonna take it easy on your ass, fool! The rookie plays another Lockdown (2x GCollapse), fills his field and then Card Destructs. Brandon goes in Def. mode again until something comes his way, holding out with a Solemn Wishes. Rookie brings outs a Red Eyes that goes thru Brian's Nimble Mogs and then slams into a Wall of Ill, dag, all that work! Rookie gets determined, plays Shallow Grave and brings Reddie back, only to be pimped by the Wall of Ill again! Brandon finally gets a Battle Ox up to go for LPs. We see rookie play Bistro Butcher, then get fissued and gets Magic Drained until Brandon's Girochen come puts him out of our misery. Match to Brandon. So now we go to our final four!

Semi-Finals

Match 1: Karl Vs. John

Round 1
It's King Ground Collapse himself, Karl, versus John. John starts us off with a Dark Elf in attack mode. Karl counters with his Jirai Gumo in attack. John fissures JG and goes for LPs. Karl Dark Holes and attacks with Battle Ox. Someone screwed up the notes on this match, so suffice it to say that John wins with a Goblin Attack Force and a Harpies Bro.
Round 2
Don't worry, friend, it gets better next round! Karl goes Def. off top and Trap Holes John's 1st summon, a Harpies Bro. John tries again with a Goblin Force, but that too gets Holed. Karl, now 2 Def. monsters deep, sacrifices both for a Blue Eyes, only to have John get some payback and Trap Hole his ass back. Ouch! John plays 7Fish for some LP dining, then Karl reels his own 7Fish with a Sword of DS and blows John up. Here comes John's girl, Dark Elf and she stands by her man, bashing Karl in until he is a bloody mess. Congrats to you John, you going to the big table, boy!!

Match 2: Darren Vs. Brandon

Having never faced a Jinzo before, I admit i was a litte nervous. I didn't rely too heavily on traps, having sparred mostly with TrapJaw Vern, so F it, I had to go for it. I had to represent for the house, seeing how Karl had just got done.

Round 1
I go first and play a Gearfield in Att. He comes with a Dark Elf and smacks Gear down. (am I the only ohe here that ain't playing her?) U got something for that ass, Raegeki! But he Magic Drains me and I don't throw out, so there goes that idea. I still play Harpies Bro, thought. He tries to Tribute of the Doom my boy, but I have to suck it up and Solemn Judgement that, man that cost a bunch! 1/2 my LPs so early got me bending over already. Damn, now im @ 3800 and he's only hit me once. So I play 7Fish and he and Bro go for Brandon's LPs. I feel like my Judgement call will pay off, but check this shit out. This is slick as hell, I'll give some props where they due. When he played TOTD, he threw out his Blue Eyes. Now he Monster Reborns it and blasts my 7Fish off the board. I'm like cool, but I got my own plan. Change of Heart that bitch and bring out my own baby Blue. Lile hell I did, cuz he Magic Drained me again and I was left with crappy Def. monsters until BEWD ripped me a new one. Round 1 to Brandon.
Round 2
Ok, maybe I'll get me some frickin' monsters this time. Play 7Fish to start, he fissures it. Off to a bad start already. He hits my Man-Eater Bug and I upgrade to a Skullie and go for some hot LPs, then he (again) TOTD me, Time Seals me and activates his Solemn Wishes. Damn. He's on the Def. now with a couple face-downs. Meanwhile, I build back up to my second Skullie and attack. Brandon counters with Shift and I smack his Lab Wall and take a lick. I come back and fissure the Wall and start to make a comeback, only to get Dark Holed for my trouble. He Soul Ex. me for his BEWD and kisses me goodnight. That's match folks. I'm out!! Swept the hell out of my own tourney. What would Pegasus react? I decide not to call my attack dawgs on they ass and congrat the man for a good fight. So now, Yu-Ghett-Oh! has its first set of finalists, John and Brandon.

Da Finals!! John Vs. Brandon

8 people brought they ass over to my house with the hope of winning the coveted packs. Now, after much trash talk and Sprite, we had out 2 warriors, John and Brandon, both beatdown guys at heart. John's Dark Elf has paved a smooth road to the finals, while Brandon has busted a rookie and a vet to get him to the big table. So, we broke out my new special, no-punks-allowed dueling table and everyone knew they had arrived. Man this table is damn sweet! Too bad I can't play on it (sniff). Well, the prize is in sight, so it's time to dammit D-d-d-d-d-duel!!

Round 1
Josh wins the roll and plays Pot O' Greed, and lays down his chic Dark Elf. Brandon counters with a Gumo. Josh goes thru a cople Nimbles, but he hits a Ladybug that rocks Josh's Bro, 7Fish and Dark Elf. Brandon gets a 7Fish with a Nuzzy on it and grubs Josh's LPs, then puts down a Ground Collapses. John gets a ManBug to kill Fishie. Brandon plays Light of Intervention. A couple rounds pass and John plays Pot of Greed twice thanx to Magician of Faith. John then plays 7Fish with Reinforcements to attack Gumo, which Brandon Reinf. back, John Reinf. yet again and Brandon makes him waste all that with a Wabuko. We knew it was coming sooner or later, ladies and gents, Jinzo is in the house! He minces 7Fish upon arrival. John Change of Hearts Jinzo, but makes a costly mistake. See John had a Skullie in his hand and controlled Jinzo, but didn't use Jinzo as sacrifice meat, so he just hit Brandon's LPs and gave it back. Damn, so after that Jinzo just attacks Brandon and he goes right back to the other side of the board. Jinzy slaps John around, then gets Fissured. But Brandon plays LaJinn and wails on John. John plays Dark Hole 2x thanks to MOF, but Brandon's Battle Ox comes int and keeps beating until Big Eye comes and pushed John over and ends Round 1.
Round 2
John comes with Dark Elf(again) and Brandon a Gumo(again, again). John's Harpy Bro gets Dark Holed, but he comes back with a Dark Elf with Robblin Goblin to boot. Brandon's TOTD destorys Elf girl and his Jirai Gumo attacks, but the flip failed and the 1/2 LP cost hits Brandon hard. John gets a Skullie out and goes thru a few monsters, until it hit a Lab Wall. No prob, as John gives Skullie a Nuzzy and puts Brandon on the ropes. A Harpys Bro and 7Fish join in and finish Brandon off. We tied, ya'll!
Final Round, Fight!!
So we down to the last round of the night, with both our guys showing they were meant to be sittin' at the big table. But who would go home the Yu-Ghett-Oh! champ and who would go home as the top-ranked loser of the night? We are about to find out...
Brandon plays LaJinn and John begins to fill up his field and then Card Destructs, but he is Magic Drained and loses his hands. Definately not how you want to start the Final round. But John holds out to get a LaJinn himself, which is Trap Holed. No worries thought cuz John Change of Hearts Brandon's LaJinn and give it a Nuzzy to attack with and boosts it with Reinforcements. However, Brandon sets up a fair attack himself. Slowly Brandon elimiates all of John's monsters until a he destroys John with an attacking Wall of Illusion, a LaJinn and a Girochen. We have our first Yu-Ghett-Oh! League Champion, Brandon!!

We congrat Brandon on his victory as he gladly accepts his hard-earned set of Booster Packs and the title Yu-Ghett-Oh! Champion! Enjoy, cuz you gotta come back and defend it from us crazed Dual Monster fans next week!

Take yo' ass home!
