HOST: Phil Donahue
NETWORK: Syndicated
DATE AIRED: November 6th, 1967-May 2nd, 1996
This show was the pioneer for all of the talk shows that we see today. Phil Donahue, known for his more liberal point of view was the host of this legendary talk show. It lasted for 29 years in syndication.
The "Phil Donahue Show" debuted on November 6th, 1967. The show came out at a time when smoking was just being viewed as dangerous to your health. Madeline O'Hearre was trying to ban prayer from schools. These controversial topics were addressed on this new style of show, and "The Phil Donahue Show" took off from there.
Throughout the 70's and the majority of the 80's the show remained on the top ratings wise. About 1987 (?) new comer Oprah took over the top spot. In 1992 Donahue celebrated 25 years on the airwaves, but by 1993 the show was steadily declining in the ratings.
When 1996 came around Donahue decided to pull the plug on the show. After 29 seasons the show was done and over with. The show goes out quietly, yet the last show airs various clips from throughout the years and everyone ends on a positive note.
MY FINAL THOUGHT: Although I may not have always agreed with Donahue's thoughts politically and non-politically, I think that this show will always be an example to future talk shows. I give this show a 10 out of 10.
