Ocarina of Time Majora's Mask A Link to the Past Link's Awakening The Legend of Zelda The Adventure of Link

Virgin Megastore Roundtable, Febuary 21st 2003

Could you please explain how the different Zelda games tie together and whether Link is the same in each game.

Miyamoto: In the long history of Hyrule, there are a number of Links which have made contributions. We'd need to write long papers indeed to cover all the background of this.

Aonuma: Many people ask me why I chose to have Link's sister for the first time. We really wanted to have a motivation for an ordinary boy to get involved in a big adventure. We thought having to rescue his sister would be a good trigger.

Previously Link has been seen as simply born to fight evil, but now the new Link is an ordinary boy who, suddenly, becomes involved in an adventure.

In past Zelda games, Zelda was still the ordinary boy but he was supposed to fight evil. The most important thing is that players are growing along with Link. To do this, Link must be ordinary to start with then must meet with destiny so it becomes clear how he can evolve.

Ocarina of Time - Majora's Mask - A Link to the Past - Oracle of Seasons - Oracle of Ages - Link's Awakening - The Legend of Zelda - The Adventure of Link

The Legend of Zelda

Ganon, Prince of Darkness, attacks the kingdom of Hyrule with his army and steals the Triforce of Power. Fearing his wicked rule, Princess Zelda splits the Triforce of Wisdom into 8 pieces before being captured, and sends her nursemaid, Impa to find a hero to recover the Triforce and save Hyrule.

The Adventure of Link

Many years have passed since Link destroyed Ganon, the King of Evil, took back the Triforce and saved Zelda, but Ganon's minions remain and Hyrule is on the road to ruin. Near his 16th birthday, the crest of the Triforce appears on the back of Link's hand, and he is told of the "legend of Zelda" and the sleeping Princess. Link must make his way through 6 Palaces, returning crystals to their stone statues to break the binding force on the final palace, and recover the Triforce of Courage so that he may use all 3 pieces of the Triforce to wake the sleeping princess Zelda, and save Hyrule.

A Link to the Past

100 years before the original Legend of Zelda, a evil wizard, Agahnim, has siezed control of the kingdom, and is plotting to break the seal on the Dark World that the seven sages had created so long ago to imprison the evil that lay there.

Link's Awakening

After fullfilling the Hyrulian prophecy of the Legendary Hero and destroying Ganon, Link set out on a quest to hone his skills to prepare for future challenges in his homeland.

Ocarina of Time

Predating all other Zelda games, Ocarina of Time tells the story of how the lowly thief, Ganondorf, obtained the Triforce and became the King of Evil, Ganon.

Majora's Mask

A few months after sealing Ganondorf away in the Dark World, young Link heads out on a personal journey to find the friend he parted ways with at the end of his previous adventure, Navi. His adventure takes a turn for the worse when he is ambushed by two fairies a skull kid wearing a strange mask, who then steals Epona and the Ocarina of Time from Link. Link follows after, and is brought to Termina, a world very similar to his own yet different at the same time, where it is said that the moon will fall in 3 days.

The Wind Waker

A legend is told that 100 years ago, a Hero of Time sealed a great evil away and saved a far away kingdom.
