Correspondence Chess Notation
The notation system used by The 65th Square is in keeping with both club rules and ICCF standards for move notation.
A standardized system of notation is strongly encouraged for all players. Failure to follow a standard notation may result in a loss in adjudication or appeal. Both players are expected to track their time used. Failure to do so may result in a lost appeal due to a loss on time.
The fields in gray are not required for move transmissions. They are included for illustrative purposes only. It is also understood that things may not always be so neat as they are here. E-mail systems often reformat text with each transmission. These examples are to demonstrate what information is required for each move.
The examples below are both from the same game.
The "Date Received" is left blank on whites first move as, obviously, white could not receive a move prior to the commencement of play.
"Time Used This Move / Total Time Used" is a measure of reflection time. For example, Black's eleventh move was sent four days after white's eleventh was received. The number after the slash is the total time used by black so far in this game. In this example it reflects a total of 16 days reflection time used by black after his/her eleventh move.
White sent black a conditional move with his/her fourth. Black accepted the conditional move and left the "if" in place. Had black declined the conditional move, the "if" would have been removed. Total time does not change for either player as a result of a conditional moves acceptance. Normal time considerations hold for a declined conditional move.
White's eleventh move was sent with an error; either as an illegal move or as an ambiguous move. White had spent a total of 2 days calculating his move. This is the total time used, both before and after the error. The "+5" reflects a five day penalty for transmitting an erroneous move.
This is a sample game in Numeric Notation:
