Donnie Braso - Movie Review

Donnie Brasco

cover

Special Agent Donnie Brasco, Joe Pistone (Johnny Depp) was a secret agent employed by the F.B.I. to go undercover to investigate the mob. After looking for mob connections for a while Donnie meets Lefty (Al Pacino) and instantly impresses him. Lefty takes him under his wing. Lefty and his friends, Sonny Black (Michael Madson), Nicky (Bruno Kirby) and Paulie (James Russo) open up a casino in Florida. This was setup by the F.B.I. and the guy who ran the casino was also working undercover. They didn't pay off the local cops and the got busted. Sonny Red(Robert Miano) and his crew were going to wack Donnie and his crew and then take over New York. Sonny Black got to them first and took Donnie under his wing personally, creating tension between Lefty and Donnie. Donnie gets deeper and deeper into the mob life not talking to the F.B.I. or even his wife Maggie(Anne Heche).

I think Al Pacino does an excellent job playing a down on his luck gangster. Its very interesting to see how Lefty trains and molds Donnie to become a gangster. Pacino and Michael Madson are what make this movie great. This movie is based on a book and a real life story. The characters in the movie are losely based on what happened in real life. The language of this movie is awesome, and they produce some great quotes like Donnie's explanation of "forget about it", Lefty telling Donnie not to do things that a wiseguy wouldn't do, the whole rank structure in the mob speech and many more. If you like other mob movies, check out this lesser known classic!
