Bend it Like Beckham - Movie Review

Bend it Like Beckham

cover

Bend it Like Beckham is a movie about how the main character Jesminder Bharama (Parminder K. Nagra) wants to play soccer. A girl named Juliette Paxton (Keira Knightley) spots Jes playing soccer with her mates. She see's that she is really good and invites her to try out for the girls soccer team she is playing for. At the tryouts Jes meets Joe (Johnathan Rhys-Meyers) a former male soccer player, who became coach of the girls team. Jes has to deal with her traditional Indian family who thinks girls shouldn't play soccer. She also makes Julliette jealous by sparking a relationship up with Joe, who Juliette fancied. In the end it is up to Jes's father Mr. Bhamra (Anupam Kher) whether or not she can leave her sister's wedding to go play at the championships.

I went to this movie because my girlfriend's friend at school is Indian and she said she liked this movie. It turned out to be pretty good. The story is pretty good and isn't as mushy and sentimental as most "chick flicks". The different cultures also make the movie interesting with awesome english accents and crazy Indian people at weddings. Overall this movie was alot better than I thought it would be, I probably wouldn't go alone to it but take your girlfriend to it and enjoy it with her. Oh and one more thing, its called Bend it Like Beckham because Jes's favourtie soccer star is named David Beckham who used to play for Manchester United. Bend it, I think, is British slang for kicking the soccer ball.
