Ulysses' Challenge #5
(Click here for last month's challenge)

(Who is Ulysses?)

Ulysses:  You were pretty hard on Nimzowitsch in your Attitude Check  this month, Coach Pete.
Pete:
That’s true, Ulysses, but he deserved it.  Standing on a table and calling your opponent an idiot at the top of your voice is not my idea of a good display of sportmanship at a chess tournament.
Ulysses:  I completely agree.  Nimzowitsch was pretty strange in other ways too, wasn't he?
Pete:  Tartakower's dictum was, “He pretends to be crazy in order to drive us all crazy.”
Ulysses:  Yeah, though you’ve got to admit he was a great player!
Pete:  That he was.  I’m guessing you have an example for us?
Ulysses:  Well, it just so happens…
Pete:  Tell us about it, Ulysses.

Ulysses:  In this position, Nimzowitsch is Black.  It looks like his king is dying a horrible death.  White’s last move was the apparently killing 32. Bxh6, blowing open the h-file.  Now 32…Bxh6  33. Qxh6+ leads to mate in one.  However, Nimzowitsch had a stunning stroke prepared which turned the tables and caused his opponent to resign immediately.  My challenge this month:  find Nimzowitsch’s brilliant move!

Remember, the first correct solution I receive from each Chess Odyssey club, or from a camper during a camp week, wins a cool prize.  Plus, every Chess Odyssey student who simply gets a solution to me before the 7/25/03 deadline will receive 2 points...or 5 points if their solution is correct (yes, the Odyssey points & awards system applies through the summer!).  You can either turn your solution in at club/camp or mail it (with your name and return address!) to Chess Odyssey, 2373 NW 185th, #261 Hillsboro, OR 97124, or you can type your solution in an email and send it here.

Note:  If you're not a Chess Odyssey student, feel free to send us your answer also (though
prizes are only for those in our programs) and we'll be happy to let you know how you did.
