Homer

According to scholars, the ancient Greek poet Homer wrote his major works, The Iliad  and The Odyssey, some time prior to 700 B.C.E.  In so doing, he left a terrific record of Greek mythology, full of the legends of the gods, goddesses, heroes and heroines of ancient times.

It is unlikely that the blind author originated many of these stories; rather, he documented, in verse, a series of oral tales that were part of the cultural tradition of ancient Greece.  The rich language of these classical texts has inspired writers ever since.
