If you're like me, you played NES Contra before arcade Contra, and because of that I got a rude awakening when it came to the coin muncher. It's HARD! The general feeling is that the home version has tighter control, which is the case and leads to some of the difficulty. Throw in limited number of continues and you've got the rest. Perhaps I have the difficulty up because the boss at the end of Base 2 was ridiculous. >:b It could be that I'm terrible, but...nah. A nice effect is that the gun you're holding changes when you get a different power-up, and something kind of funny is that some of the NES bosses show up as overpowered normal enemies. Another difference is that there's a map displayed while you're inside the base stages, and you have to hang a left or right at the end of the corridor whereas in the NES you'd just go straight. Like, a bunch of arcade games of this era, Contra can be finished in around 7 minutes. Short but sweet. The game uses a vertical monitor which is annoying to work with at home without an arcade cabinet (and because you'll be done in 7 minutes...).One of the surprising factors about this board is definately the amplified audio. Sounds great. The alien characters were highly inspired by HR Geiger's works.
