Carolina Hurricanes
MY 3 STARS

#1 - Arturs Irbe
His short stature clearly has no effect on his abilty to stop the puck. His play sets up a virtual wall across the bottom of the net.

#6 - Bret Hedican
Hedican, like much of his team, plays with intense grit and determination. I have labelled him one of the "Black-eye Brothers", after he took a beating during the playoffs.

#92 - Jeff O'Neill
The other "Black-eye Brother", O'Neill's speed and scoring touch were an asset during the playoffs. He received his shiner when he stopped a Toronto clearing attempt with his eye.

A Breif History PlayersPlayers Coaching & ManagementCoaching & Management
The Hurricanes joined the NHL as the Hartford Whalers in 1979-80. Throughout their short history, captain Ron Francis had guided them to 1 Adams and 2 Southeast Division titles. As a whole, Hartford had very little significant success, especially during the playoffs. So in 1996-97, the team was moved to Carolina. Since the move, the team has continued on a mediocre performance, until finally emerging as the Eastern Conference champs this year. Although they ultimately lost to Detroit in the finals, Carolina has proven that they can indeed be a contender, and that they have become a very tough, physical team.
