Employees of The Red Rat
The Red Rat Girls
Nellie: An older prostitute working in the Red Rat who has a son of her own. She is a very good friend of Lucy's, but a realistic and disillusioned person who can't see the chances Lucy is hoping for. Nellie is the only one Lucy trusts in the Red Rat.
Olga: A woman in her early fifties and is a matronly, stout woman. She's originally from Russia, and is a bitter and stern old woman, not saying very much at all. When she does say something, it's often to scold the girls for laziness or something similar. Olga has been working as a prostitute for most of her life. Olga gets up before everyone else and cleans the bar room, then makes breakfast. At mid-day she cleans the girls' rooms and gives laundry to a washer-woman. She also makes the meals for the rest of the day; simple but nourishing food.
Kate: Petite, smallish of chest and hip, with long dark chestnut hair and hazel eyes. Kate had an eating disorder and really dislikes her work, causing her to be melancholy and somewhat cynical.
Meg: A young teen, blonde hair and large luminous eyes. Meg is a shy girl, only becoming a whore to escape the orphanage.
Polly: curly red hair, freckles, late teens, happy girl. She is a member of the dance team.
Alice: In her early 30's, blonde, quiet and beautiful. Sophisticated and used to mingle with the upper class, Alice is sometimes sent away to "entertain" at private parties in the better part of town
Fanny: a bit heavy, brunette, giggles a lot, early twenties.
**The dance team is part of the nightly shows at the Red Rat. Lucy Harris sings while these girls perform a dance that was taught to them by Nellie.
The Red Rat Fellows
Bill, the bartender: tall and thin in this thirties, with brown hair and a high hairline, Bill has a lot of humor.
George, the piano player: stout and gray-haired with large sideburns, in his fifties. George smokes cigars and wears a bowler hat. A glass of beer is always on his piano.
Charlie, a bouncer: used to be a dock worker before starting to work as a bouncer in the Red Rat. He is in his early thirties, is big and burly and wears a large black beard. Charlie stands just over 6' tall and is sly and street-smart.
