Name: Mary Reilly

Appearance: Mary is in her early twenties, slim and of average height. She is a pretty girl with hazel eyes, red hair and fair skin.

Personality: Mary is trusting, vulnerable, shy and sometimes sad. She doesn't mind hard work and is very dutiful. She serves her master as a loyal chamber maid, sensitive to his weaknesses, attuned to his needs. In fact, Mary is in love with the Doctor and would do almost anything for him. Her only confidente is the maid Bet.

Past: Mary grew up in a small town in Ireland in a poor family. She was beaten and threatened by her hard-drinking father. When she was nine years old, her father locked her into a closet with a large rat. Mary still carries scars from that horrible experience, and has a fear of rats and enclosed spaces since then. Her mother took her away from home after this, and Mary has served as a maid ever since. She is happy in the Jekyll household, because the master is the kindest she has ever served.

Mary's trust is a blessing to the Doctor as he has embarked on a new experiment, one which requires sympathy and understanding, discretion and silence. Mary has just met his elusive, shadowy assistant Mr. Hyde, and through him she will come face to face with the darkest, most private aspects of herself.
