Yet, under this facade, there is a soul that is in turmoil. The way Hastie acts and what he actually feels are separated very carefully. A glimpse behind the facade show that Hastie is angry and bit tortured. He originally did not want to marry his wife Elsa. He never intended to have a family, but only did so because he could not remain in London otherwise. His strong desire for pleasures, such as visiting whores and drinking too much, convey that the wild young man with the bad temper had never changed, only been suppressed. The only two people who know that version of Hastie are Henry Jekyll and Gabriel Utterson. Even they do not know everything, such as the existence of his bastard daughter Sara Anderson, living in Scotland or that he was engaged to none other than Christine Farraday, whom he still loves. Yet his recent divorce allows for old flames to be explored. Lately, Hastie's darker sides are starting to emerge when many of the things he fought for in his life are beginning to slip through his fingers... |
